SAAF Chief apparently suspended - no comment from SANDF

by defenceWeb, July 10, 9:56 am

SAAF Chief suspendedSA Air Force (SAAF) Chief Lieutenant General Zakes Msimang is apparently on special leave after being suspended from duty.

DefenceWeb was reliably informed of the suspension on Monday. At the time of publication no response had been received from either SA National Defence Force (SANDF) directorate; corporate communications or SAAF media liaison to a request for information on the suspension. This was after urgent emails to both offices and telephonic follow-ups.

A source close to the air force, but not in uniform, told defenceWeb the three star general was suspended while at least two allegations against him are investigated.

The first apparently relates to illegal usage of an official M vehicle (military, in this instance the Mercedes-Benz Msimang has as an official vehicle). The registration plates were apparently changed to civilian ones. Indications are his driver/bodyguard drove the vehicle while it was using a registration plates that did not belong to it. This was apparently found out when a number of traffic fines were issued for the vehicle.

The second allegation concerns funding for a children's project Msimang and his wife are said to be part of.

Msimang was appointed SAAF chief in September 2012 taking over from Lieutenant General Carlo Gagiano and became the first black officer to head the military aviation service of the SANDF. He previously served as squadron commander, base commander and systems director in the SAAF.

No further information was available at the time of publication. Apart from not commenting on the suspension SANDF and SAAF media liaison also provided no information on any possible board of inquiry, its terms of reference and work timeframe.

Things are not going so well at SAAF HQ. Heard they have issues with plumbing and have to have water tanking trucks deliver water there. Budget cuts have really bitten hard in every operational aspect of the SAAF. Morale is apparently not so great. And then you have this...oi.

The SAAF HQ building has had Health and Safety issues for a long time. AFAIK, it does not adhere to modern building safety regulations and will be extremely expensive to upgrade.
How come every time my ship comes in I'm at the airport?

Well, no surprise there; this goes for the entire establishment, including what is left of the fleet.

In 25 years they have taken a proud, incredibly well functioning establishment and literally ripped it’s guts out.

I think the same can be said for the entire SANDF. I spent five very proud years in the Navy many moons ago and I eventually stopped attending the Navy Day in Simons Town because I could no longer stomach the total decay in evidence everywhere. Fantastic locations like the old Signal School on the mountain above the dockyard and Waterfall Barracks are in shcoking condition with no discipline or pride in evidence anywhere and bad behaviour that is beyond belief. Incredibly sad if one considers what our Defence Force was.

Swartkops a shocker as well when I went to look at the C185's. Embarrassing comes to mind. Luckily they are changing most of the names of places so it represents the New order and not the old

You don't have to look far on facebook to see tons of SA interest groups sprouting false articles to push a negative agenda. Only today has one group regurgitated fake articles quoting government officials denying farm attacks, encouraging poaching and others. The same debunked rubbish from a year ago.
It is happily forwarded and no one fact checks because it supports their agenda and beliefs.

The source was DefenceWeb. Seeing it's defence related 1 would tend to believe the article.

The Xweb group is not exactly the bastion of journalism, the internet has long since shown it has strengths and, frequently, many weaknesses.

The same can be said for the Statement release from the Defense force. Could be fake also due no signature. Anybody could have written that.
Unfortunately fake news are more available on social media these days than the truth. Very difficult to believe what one sees on the net.
