Jet @ Railway Station

Postby Duke » Wed Dec 21, 2011 2:42 pm

Hi Everyone,

I departed FAJS Rwy 21R yesterday VFR to FAWB and on the "Right turn not before the upwind threshold" I noticed a Fighter Jet standing next to a railway station just to the South of the Airport.

Can anyone tell me what type of jet that is and maybe why its standing there?

Thanx.

No, not an Impala. It had swept wings. Not a delta wing either. If I had to guess I would say it had the profile of a Mirage F1.

If you look on Google Maps its more or less between Isando train station and Elandsfotein train station.

But that is at the northern end of the field almost parallel to the runway 21R threshold.
The Impala at the primary school is also near that end

He was talking about it being on the southern end of the field

It is indeed a Mirage F1 AZ, I saw it too while I was flying over in the chopper, 1st time I noticed it.

Just to the west of ORTIA near the Kempton shunting yards, seemed to have been moved there recently.

It could well be one of the many fiberglass F1s that were manufactured in the 80s and used as decoys. After 1989, many were sold, many were used as Air-to-Ground targets and some are even used as Gate Guards. If one looks carefully at the HQ at Vastrap on Google, you will see a F1 displayed there, not a real one, but one of the decoys. Shows how well the decoys worked. :D
