Savannah: Adventure Flying

Unread postby johanlochner » Thu Oct 08, 2015 4:49 pm

Adventure Flying
Speaking for myself, the main reason for getting a Savannah was to explore those out of the way bush type destinations.
Lurking around the threads, I've seen some amazing locations, and was just wondering where you guys have taken your babies....
Post some 'Show and tell" pix to make us drool, dream and plan future getaways!

I had to attend a meeting in Windhoek, so at fairly short notice Ross and I decided we would take the "long way round".
Ross Templeman is my instructor.... (Only learning to fly now!)
We left Port Elizabeth last week Saturday and made our way up North

Crammed in like sardines!
We restricted our luggage to 20kg, but we had plenty of packing space, so we thankfully took along 2x 25 litre fuel drums (Empty of course)

We landed on a desolate runway at Vosberg. It is a small town that lies between Request and Britstown in the upper Karoo to simply strech our legs.
From there we headed up to Upington to clear customs and continued up to Keetmanshoop.
We had to wait for the Customs and Immigration officials to arrive as they have to be called out.
From there we headed south west to the upper reaches of the Fish River Canyon where we landed at the Canyon lodge runway.
Total flying time 9.1 hours

We stayed over at the Canyon Village surrounded by Quiver trees, Nama culture and rugged sweeping rock formations in the landscape.

We had to bum a lift from the lodge staff and drive 20 km to the Canyon Roadhouse to get some 95 unleaded petrol

We flew the beautiful Fish River Canyon down to Ai-Ais
The Ai Ais Richtersveld Transfronteir National Park offers spectacular desert scenery.
From there we continued up over some amazing rock formations

The leg up towards Sossusvlei was long and hot with the burnt dessert landscape seeming endless
