Hey Rudi

Looks absolutely awesome Rudi.

Only you were more lucky than you thought

Then we saw a big herd of blue wildebeest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_wildebeest
Image

My guess is that this herd of BUFFALo were either in The Sabie or Crocodile River (guessing Crocodile)

Best Regards

Yep, Ryan, your guess is most certainly correct.
Them's buffs.

Nice trip, Rudi.

Glad the weather was ok. We flew balloons over the weekend, by the way. Pity you couldn't make it.

I don’t know who was on duty at ATC Hoedspruit on Friday morning, but what a wonderful experience. As I approached his airspace he called me over to Hoedspruit frequency from the Lowveld frequency (Lowveld was not manned since it was before 8am). He had one look at my flight plan and asked…
Hoedspruit ATC: ”LUZ from your flightplan I assume you want to fly the Blydepoort valley?”
Me: “Affirm”...enough said, this ATC knew I was here for the sight seeing!
ATC: “Cleared for the valley report exiting Blydepoort Canyon, enjoy!”

My guess is that you spoke to "Scarlet" of AvCom.

Well, they're all very friendly and professional at Hoedspruit Approach. so its difficult to tell.

Theuns, that is exactly why I take the effort to do trip write ups, to inspire people to GO FLY!

Rudi, your pic is sharp enough to make out the buffalo profiles, but even if one can't, they're easy to ID by their attitude:
Buffalo move about like they own the place.
Wildebeest, on the other hand, know full well that they're at the wrong end of the predator-prey relationship and that realization is reflected in their attitude..
Up close, it is often said, a buffalo looks at you like you owe it money:

Hi Wynand, I have picked up on avcom you are our regular wildlife expert, it is the 2nd time you corrected me  well done!

Anycase looking through my pics I got this better pic of Numbi airstrip, showing most of the hazards of the strip, a better shot of the hill and tower on the south, just out of sight is a tower on the right, vissible in my other pictures over the shopping center.

Hi Ian,

There were 2 other RVs visiting there during the weekend, but I missed them, must be some of the locals from the area, that just came by for a stop and go. The RV Airplane can do it "easy", but the pilot needs to get his head around it first. For the locals I think the runway is a non event! For us city slickers with long tar runways it takes getting use to.

Hi Paul,

Actually those power lines are lower in the valley, so they are lower than the shopping center, so they don't really pose a danger. You will have to dip below the shopping center to hit them, and at that stage you will look straight into Pick'n'Pays door and see the specials on display! You are right I still I don't want to entangle in them, but that will mean a below runway (negative) approach.

Below is the view for take-off in the other direction looking to the shopping center backside. You can't see the shopping center or power lines, since it is all just below the end of the runway's edge, and the ground slopes away into the valley.

There is a strip at Addo where you take off downhill and land uphill.
Quite good fun
You must come to the fly Inn

Rudi thanks for the update & clearance on the powerlines. You know I'm a bit more sensitive after Potch
