EDITED [8 Aug 2005] update subject to "RV build progress"
Reason: A couple of my fellow AvCom RV 'Friends' asked me to give them regular updates... so if you guys don't mind I will keep on adding my RV building trails & tribulations to this thread every now and then for them.

PS: If you are ever in the Gauteng/Springs area over a weekend and would like to see what an RV is all about, come and visit me...083-245-9955

Kind Regards
Rudi

I know there are a couple of fellow RV builders lurking around on Avcom...so I just wanted to say to all of them:

It seems like Xmas...I-ho...I-ho...the flaps and ailerons on done, it's onto the wings I GO..I-ho..I-ho...

G@tvol & Nuts for platenuts

Postby RudiGreyling » Mon Aug 08, 2005 1:43 pm

Thanks guys for the motivation and feedback...

On the weekend I started on those nice shiny golden main wing spars. First task is to prepare the spars for 120 fuel tank attachment platenuts.

After 7 Hours I visited 1080 holes: (3 holes for every platenut x 120 platenuts) x 1 for drilling, x 2 for countersinking, x3 for deburring.
Hence I'm G@tvol & Nuts for platenuts!

The main wing spars

Finished one side...3 sides still to go

Finished countersinking but before deburring.

Kind Regards
Rudi

PS: If you ever need to do this, call me I've got a nice tip on how to make it easier than the RV instruction manual prescribes!!

Hi guys, I see T-bird has already noted our site. We are now full blast into the fuselage. The puzzle pieces are getting bigger and bigger!! I can tell you that although it is a lot of hard work, it is very, very, rewarding to see an aeroplane taking shape like this. Keep on going Rudi!

NutPlates

Postby RudiGreyling » Mon Aug 15, 2005 8:51 am

Been a slow week due to flu  and my day time job requiring overtime :( .

I installed all the nutplates, 152 of them, on the spars for the fuel tanks and the inspection panels. Thank goodness for my pneumatic squeezer, it made a borring task pretty painless.

For those that don't know what a nutplate is, it is those little black things on the spar i.e. a nut on a plate, and one attach them with 2 rivets each. That way you can put a screw in them without holding the nut with a spanner.

Till next time,
Rudi

To my fellow RV friends...

Another slow week due to my day job requiring overtime  and the AP course :D I attended on the weekend.

I started and finished the 'manufacturing' of the tie-down bracket assembly, you can see in the picture below how it all will go together. The aileron belcrank will fit between those 2 white brackets that fits on the rear of the spar bolted together with the tie-down assembly on the front. The eye bolt goes into this assembly like shown after the wings are skinned, and then one can tie your plane down securely to that.

More pictures on my website (Follow the "wings" link)
Till next time...

Please post some feedback on the AP course (maybe new thread). I was unable to attend due to work pressure...
