=D> Beautiful pic that. Also noteworthy is the unique, unmistakable sound it made.
Flying for fun's too expensive so making music instead.

I am wearing my orange trousers today - in honour of today's slides, not as a lack of fashion statement. There is an airline in South Africa that has had some interesting liveries over the years. Albeit with some slightly confusing variants. The only consistent items are the name in English and Afrikaans, the flag, and the Springbok. Today's subject is Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens.

First out is ZS-DJB Simonsberg. Built as a C-47A, she was built as part of a USAAF contract in 1942 before transferred to the RAF and the SAAF as 6801. In 1954 she joined SAL/SAA before re-enlisting in 1971. The last stop was with 3 Sqd Rhodesian Air Force/Air Force of Zimbabwe as 7312. She was destroyed at Chimoio in 1986.

1986? Surely you mean 1976?

No, it happened while in AFZ service. The Chimoio Raid or Operation Dingo was 23 to 25 November 1977.

Over to a very similar Viscount at Jan Smuts.

Now the previous two are very similar. Same font, same position of flag, Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens on the starboard side. Enter the HS.748 and so do the changes. Minute to begin with, but more to follow

Then they moved Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens to the port side - on some aircraft - with a redo of the livery and the flag to the back.

I <love> that first portrait of the Buccaneer! Thanks, Scanav. Can anyone comment on what pilots thought of it, as an aircraft? Was it loved by aircrews (as I imagine)?

The gorgeous Staggerwing -AJT (I remember the aircraft very well) was obviously taken at FAVG. And I also remember that Hawker Siddeley -SVB, often seeing it (or one of its stable-mates) on the apron at Gaberone, Matsapa or elsewhere.

What would December be without these wonderful photographic reminiscences of his?

Staying the realm of civilian aviation - or perhaps not. From a time when "civilian" pilots had military hair cuts

The second one of the day. This beats shovelling snow as I did in the meantime.

I'll venture a guess that this is related to the previous one flying for the same airline...

Did that Staggerwing, ZS-AJT, a couple of pages back, belong to Tony Torr (sp?)

Talking of ZS-AJT, I was under the impression it is in the UK, undergoing restoration. Is it indeed back in SA?

If you don't gear up your brain before takeoff, you'll probably gear up your airplane on landing.
