How could I get a conversion on a...

Unread post by Jayson v Schalkwyk » Sun Jul 28, 2019 12:59 pm

I am sure we all have an aircraft we would like to fly or get a conversion on at some point in our flying journey. I am not talking about impractical things like getting a Concord or spitfire rating etc but things we can actually fly and enjoy but that we wouldn’t normally have access to.

I realise though that there might be hoops to jump through but I am pretty sure with “the power of Avcom” in some cases it might just be able to work out, if you already have the necessary ratings or endorsements. This thread could be used to get guys or gals in touch with others, provide a lead etc.

As an example, I would love to get a conversion onto a Luscombe and possibly a Tiger Moth. Who could provide any leads for those?

Thanks in advance

I really like this idea. For clarity, any information shared must specify whether it is only the training which is being offered by the instructor or whether the use of a specific type of aircraft is also being offered. For example Jason, I can offer you your dream of a Tiger Moth conversion but unfortunately, I do not have access to a Tiger. Do you???

Another challenge will be finding a suitable, willing ATO when differences training is required. A great military general of old - I cannot recall his name - once said: "Do not tell me a challenge is a difficult one. If it is not difficult, it is not a challenge". We need to adopt the same attitude towards this idea and really run with it.

Bd,

Fair point. And yes, for clarity, I don’t expect, not should any one else, expect an owner to offer his aircraft for free, or the cost of the conversion, ie fuel, instructor. This will need to fall squarely on the person wanting the rating.

Does differences or familiarity training need to go through an ATO If you already have a similar type endorsed in your license?

I am open to any suggestions and importantly, clarification from the far smarter folk in Avcom land.

Depends what you mean by "similar". The CATS/CAR's are fairly clear about whether differences or familiarization training is required. Differences requires an ATO whereas familiarisation does not.
