Discretion works both ways, and perhaps some captains don't want to be bugged too much. I think publishing the positive outcomes will get to the point where some may begin to 'expect' a jumpseat.

To answer your question I do know of some recent requests that have had a positive result from this thread.

In my Airline we have a Jump Seat Policy - I approve JS Pax on my flights and they are only available to those who are eligible (employees, eligible family, CAA types and our local ATC's have a Familiarisation flight agreement). So yes it is MY discretion to approve those who are eligible and request them and for ME to release the JS. However our policy states that all seats in the cabin need to be occupied before an eligible person may occuppy the JS. Other carriers have different policy and I have flown on the JS with SAA/SAX and CAW.

EDIT, to answer the question, in my opinion this is not the correct method to approach or ask for a JS.

Good stuff Ace Man. Same with us. For example, if I want to take my wife or kid with and they are on staff travel and I approve J1/2 for them, if there is a cabin seat open, they sit in the back. No paying pax allowed even if they beg topless in the cockpit door. Managers allowed but that can not intervene with training checking flights.

I read the other day that no paxing crew members allowed on jumpseats in Israel, some parts of the US for some far eastern carriers. I can get the finer details for that as I don't have the info nearby right now.

EDIT - NO jumpseats allowed, whatsoever outside the policy.

I think the JS requesters should just carry on what they are doing and ignore the last two pages of unsolicited twaddle. Many airlines do not accept jump seaters and some do. Only by asking will you know. The nay-sayers did not say who they work for, so their posts were of zero value in this particular thread.

I know that SAA (ticket code SAxxx) do not allow JS occupation for anyone but cockpit pass holders or crew in uniform from fellow alliance airlines, but I have found most of the others to be pretty flexible for licence holders, even the other three airlines in the alliance (SA1xxx, SA8xxx and JExxx).

Nug's, it started off with a simple question - has anyone been sucessful. You don't have to name the Captain, his licence number and the airline he works for? Just simple, yes or no?

And just to add, do you really think Avcom is the appropriate platform for this type of request? I am sure not many Comair guys, with a 90hour month roster is looking on Avcom on Sunday night who he can slap out a jumpseat for on his Monday morning 06:00 sign on? Man, I would be suprised if 10% of Avcom members are active airline drivers?

I did not know this thread was a pissing contest, my opinion remains that this thread is a waste of time. I do not use SAA or their alliances, but of choice I use CAW(MN) and would not solicit a JS here.

That was answered earlier on. So to make it simpler for you the answer is Yes.

I would be flying the following on 1 March 2017:
MN493 FALA-FACT
Departing 09:35
I am an avid aviation enthusiast and medical student who promise to keep my mouth shut at all times and just observe quietly :D

I'm flying down to Cape Town on 4 March, at 08:10, Kulula MN0117.

I'd be most grateful if I can get a jumpseat opportunity.
