Looking at the track I'd hazard a guess at Luanda

Just noticed something interesting:

On the flight track between Cape Town and Johannesburg quite a few flights loose tracking between Sutherland and Kimberley and a few show purple lines throughout. All look like commercial flights around 33 to 35 000 feet.

Any ideas?

Perhaps something to do with the SKA installation? Have a look at this article.

More likely to do with MLAT coverage in that area. If an aircraft hasn't got an ADS-B transponder on board, then coverage relies on triangulation from a few receivers. In areas of poor coverage, those aircraft disappear. Mango's 738's, Safair's 738's, and most of the 733's and 734's in SA don't have ADS-B.

Here's a link explaining it. https://www.flightradar24.com/how-it-works

AF864 bound for CT, diverted to Joburg yesterday and is currently on the way back to CT. Does anyone know why? Technical issues? Seems like they tried to land twice before climbing again.

Correct

Visibility was near zero. Many diversions. KLM couldn’t even depart with the viz being below departure minima. Was sitting on the ground since last night and expected to depart this evening.

The Comair landed. Airlink on the way too EL
That’s the difference of being only CAT 1 capable vs being able to do the CAT 2 ILS.

Comair didn't even hold. If anything, it looks like they made a switch from from runway 08 to runway 26.

Airlink had 3 goes, 2 on RWY 08 and 1 on RWY 26, the S and loop you see Comair do was ATC vectoring the Comair behind the Airlink when they where trying for the 3rd time.

Tonight at 1730z our latest A380 will get delivered ...UAE5GT A6-EVG.
She will route via UK airspace first before heading home to keep the leasing company happy....lol
