Magnetic North pole shifting erratically

The closest I get to flying these days is when I put my cellphone in 'flight mode'.

Ai. These sensationalism-seeking journalists. "Mysteriously acting up" my arse. The mag field has been doing wobblies since time immemorial.

No, it is not RT. It is based on this article from the Nature International Journal of Science, a very highly respected source:

I have no idea why scorn was poured upon this. I find it very interesting. If the chart is a conical, or modified, conical projection, as it appears, it would seem that the pole has moved more during the last 15 to 18 years than it did in the previous 100 years.

I wonder what that is all about. And does the geomagnetic south pole move in exact synch with the antipode of the geomagnetic north pole? Anyone know?

Is the earth wobbling off its axis, as was written in the book "Down to a sunless sea".

Magnificent story.

Jim, you are always the voice of reason, and Cage is getting grumpier by the day. :) You always pose interesting questions which stimulate the mind and is how topics on this forum should be handled, not with sarcasm and is why I like posting topics.

In response to your question, I decided to look around for an answer and came up with this link:

Agreed... it was a brilliant and tense read. :D

Thanks MM - that link is absolutely fascinating. I find it particularly interesting that that the magnetic N an S poles do not move in synch.

The problem I have with the reporting (even from reputable sources) is that the "mystery" and not-so-quiet panic is based on less than only 200 years of record-keeping. The data that assumptions are thus based on is infinitesimally small compared to the age of the Earth. A classic issue when modelling something with so little data for such a relatively insignificant period of time: If the model doesn't fit the actual, typically all hell breaks loose. For all we know it is just part of the Earth's totally natural cycle, i.e. it has happened before, many times, and will happen again. And Again.

Slow ......

"Liquid molten metal shifting under the poles ...." / measured as a magnetic reading shifting towards Siberia (under the Ice cap)

Is it also causing a temperature change in the ice cap in places ??
Are we seeing a possible cause of the "global warming melting the ice cap" ??
