Aircraft registration numbers and types flown by myself for various Commando squadrons between 10 October 1975 and 21 January 1983.

ZS- TYPE
KHW Piper Cherokee PA28-180
SVB Piper Seneca
Two of the ladies in my logbook have an interesting history in the hands of Uncle Jim.

Was SVB still in her drab cream paint job back then? Or did that only come later?

Hell, TDR, I don't remember - I think I only flew her a couple of times.

KUDU177,
Pse check and confirm.
The aircraft that was refueled with JET A1 was either a Cessna C404 or a C402B. It could have been ZS-MDI, it was a long time ago.
Your dad started off with a Piper Cherokee 6 ZS-ASH flying for the Commando's as I recall. After that the Bonanza and then the Beechcraft BE60 Duke ZS - KHA.

There was a all girl squadron (114 IIRC). One member, who retired as a Major, was Jeanette Fraser-Jones (RIP). She and her late husband (Ian) were the founders of a small company that had the Beechcraft Agency. It was called National Airways Corporation. They sold it to Ian's friend Tiny Rowlands, and it was later absorbed into Lohnro! (Transvaal motors was a subsidiary.) NAC has gone a long way from its humble beginnings!

I shall try and get access to her logbooks and perhaps some photographs.

Another person who could help you is Riaan (Vuurpyl) Van Zyl, Present OC of 110SQN. Pm me for his contact details.

I flew in Cessna 337E ZS-PBD of 110 Sqn in 1989.
How come every time my ship comes in I'm at the airport?

Hi Bowie,

Re the Grootfontein incident, you likely know more than me :D. I'm trying to remember the name of the pilot but brainscreen is blank right now.

My dad did begin flying for 104 Sqn with ZS-ASH.

Then followed Bonanzas ZS-JXY (destroyed in fatal CFIT accident at Standerton in April 1984 while on charter to Sun Couriers) and ZS-KLA.

The Duke was ZS-MCX which he used for SAAF transport tasks from about 1989 until he retired as 104 Sqn OC in 1997. (Not sure of the last date -- it may have been late 1996).

Based first at FALA and then AFB Swartkop, 104 was an exceptionally busy squadron. Somewhere I have the "official" squadron history (which I wrote  ) and which was submitted to the SAAF.

The unit had its share of highs and lows. The lows included a fatal accident on the Vaal River at Parys when a Cherokee 235 flew into power lines during a low-level navex; the highs flying various brass to quiet meetings between government and ANC negotiators in the bush in the early 1990s.

IIRC, Val Humphries (RIP) flew for 114. She may also have been OC.

Kudu 177
The Grootfontein pilot could have been Bill Greenwood (RIP) who had the JET A1 refueling mishap.
You have the correct BE60 registration for your dad's aircraft.
- KHA could have been flown by Pieter Toxopeus (RIP) then? Not too sure about this one anymore.

SAAF Commando / Voluantry Air Squadrons

Unread post by Spice » Fri Dec 06, 2019 8:57 am

Good day from the Sandpit,
The SAAF has operated the Comdo/VAS Squadrons for a number of years.
This system provides supplementary support to the SAAF, ito conducting various mission, ranging from 'liaison flight to visrecce'. The squadrons operate/d various aircraft (Lear 35s to C-150s....) on the ZS-register.
If you recall any aircraft type operated in this manner, please dig deep in memories and provide a list of what types you recall.
Much appreciated. Associating it with an ZS will also assist.

I recall my Dad's mate Dave Ogilvy flying his Navion ZA FAE on commando. Had a flight back from Langebaanweg with him while I was doing basics in Saldanha bay in early 1986 after they had an exercise up there.
