Sling 4 High Wing to Oshkosh 2021

Unread post by jpitman » Sun Jun 20, 2021 3:02 pm

EAA Airventure Oshkosh 2021 is happening. The Sling 4 high wing prototype has its ATF. And we’re feeling restless. So once again we’re off to Wisconsin!

If you’re interested in following this year’s Sling pilgrimage to Oshkosh, here’s the lowdown –

• The aeroplane is ZU-SHW – Sling’s beautiful new 4 seat, high wing prototype aircraft – the first of its kind.
• The pilots are James (Pitman) and Matt (Cohen). James is an old hand at these trips. For Matt it’s a first. (Though Matt and James have some history of flying adventures together)
• James has thousands of hours of Sling flight. Matt is a student pilot waiting for the CAA to issue his aviation medical so he can complete his required solo hours. He also flies a paraglider.
• Departure date is 9 July 2021 – which gives the required 14 days out of “red-list” countries before entering the USA (SA is at the top of those!)
• The planned route looks like this (though it’s open to such changes as may be required to dodge Covid, storms, unreasonable authorities and the like): JHB – Ondangwa (Namibia) – Accra (Ghana) – Praia (Cape Verde) – Charnocks (Barbados) – Fort Pierce (Florida, USA) – Oshkosh (Wisconsin, USA).

Any useful thoughts or advice, including Covid updates, critical equipment (eg: one dry suit), places to stay, good wishes, virtual love and hugs or messages of support will be much appreciated. Planned for inclusion in the luggage, in addition to the standard clothing, extra fuel and emergency gear, are a titanium Sling Cycles Tagati gravel bike (see www.slingcycles.com) and Matt’s titanium wheelchair, with electric drive.

We invite anyone interested to follow our trip both on this thread and at www.slingaircraft.com, where you will be able to track our progress, as we fly, transmitted by a Garmin Inreach satellite tracker and plotted onto a world map. We promise to answer questions, post photos, return love and generally just try bring you along with us as much as we can.

James; you guys are incredible. Your company is incredible. Your aircraft are incredible. Hopefully Mike will be at Ops to apply handbrake when required. Matt is in for a super ramped up learning experience.

Please keep it safe. We will all be watching in awe.

PS. I weigh about the same as Matt and his chair... 8)

Probably shorter than the leg they did from Rio to Cape Town a few years ago? About 15 to 17 hours?

Ha ha - Chalkie - that's so cool to hear - anything you approve of can only be a worthwhile venture! (I'll remember the weight compatibility considerations that if Matt gets airsick or something!)

I'm going to try to attach a nice little video a friend made at the end of this, which sort of captures where we are this moment.

You don't have a dry suit, do you? Would be very happy to buy it - or return it after if you do!

I'll post our main planning speeds, distances and fuel burns in the next day or two. But the simple answer is - none of the legs are nearly as long as Rio to Cape Town - and this time we have both a slightly smaller faster wing, better, more reliable systems, and most importantly, a high performance, much more powerful, much more fuel efficient and, I think, at least as reliable Rotax 915 iS engine (in place of the wonderful, but slightly older generation 914 UL).

I wish you guys clear skies and tailwinds!

The Sling product is awesome, the aircraft are all well designed and super performers and the new Tsi motor is just what was needed.

I had the priviledge to fly the Tsi low wing and I was just super impressed. This will be my rerirement aircraft for sure.

I will be following your progress and cheering you on, along with what is becoming a huge fan club here and around the world

James, I have been a huge supporter of the whole Sling outfit right from the start. I have flown your aeroplanes and love them. And I wish you every success with the high-wing.

But, I have to ask you why? The low wings are such great aeroplanes, how are the high-wing models an improvement on them? Or are they expected to fill a different market? Do you think people will buy the high-wings instead of the current range?

All the very best

Jim I think its a personal choice thing. Some people like high and some low wing. Its like the age old Cessna/Piper debate.

I think some people are also just waiting for a taildragger high wing version.

I guess you build what the customer asks for
