The bit that really intrigues me is that he became a glider pilot at 14.
What is the minimum age in SA?

Four stripes at age eighteen, wow. Not much room for advancement there. Around the world at 40 to 60 degrees north is a bit of a short cut. Not so? Now if he had crossed the equator I might agree it was an around the world flight. Doing such a flight, just to be the youngest ever is a daft idea.

OO,

He did well - and it was quite a feat at his age.
I agree that a true "RTW" should at least cross the equator once - but doing so - and the then required route in a C172 is quite an ask.
Doing it in a C414 almost cost me over the Atlantic and the Pacific run is not an option in a 172 ......
So you would have to use the Aleutians, then via Japan / Philippines etc ....down to Australia and then back up via the sub continent .....
I would pass if I had to do it in a C172 ....

Sorry but this kid is nothing but pawn in the whole thing. The kid was not “PIC” in any meaningful way, he was told where when and how by his “home base” team who made every single decision. Very bad safety culture. Lots of info on this online. His own handlers resigned because of how the father was running the show.

Reliable sources say that entire endeavour is been run to stroke the ego of the father, who micro-managed the entire thing and made all of the decisions.

I do not know how it was managed - or controlled.
I also do not know whether you have ever flown the Newfoundland / Greenland /Iceland - UK route - ( I have - in a twin - and would not do it in a single ) but I assure you that most Pilots (especially at 18 years) would quickly give that a miss.

Well done to the young man - regardless of the "spin"

Maybe I should be clearer. I’m not criticising the kid in anyway. What he did took courage. But the way it all come about in the background raises so many red flags. External pressures are a known challenge for pilots and this young guy was pushed by his parents which is a very dangerous thing for a pilot, especially one so young of course. I’m just glad it worked out ok.

Fair enough,

I am not au-fait with the background - albeit that I realize that whole marketing campaigns are set up to finance events like this.

As for the young man - it takes quite some character and big cahoona's to fly the Kamchatka - Aleutian - Adak route and then to cross the Northern Atlantic in a single engine piston plane.

Once he takes off - all the "background noise" becomes just that ........ and he is on his own ....

Anybody know what the significance of the SA flag on his aerie is?
Character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you.

You've got it wrong. Go read up on circumnavigations, all of them mention the importance of a good home base.

Well done to this young man!

What you say about the valie of good support is true but read up on the specifics on this arrangement and talk to the guys at GASE who are excellent at what they do and you’ll get a whole different picture. It takes a lot for them to step away from a project and yet they had to do just that.

Ok, I haven't read up on this. It's true that many parents push their children unrealistic hard to achieve their own goals. Sad if it's true..
