Rotax announced the end of production for the last remaining two stroke - the much loved 582.

I had two of these myself. Good reliable little power plant, one in a trike and the other in a Jora fixed wing.

RIP

I loved Rotax 2 strokes. Started with a 124 air cooled in the 80s, through to a few 256s putting out 85 BHP from a quarter litre right up to my last 618. Now I have two 912 S's. Nothing beats the power to weight ratio of a good 2 stroke.

Yes fantastic engines I have one in my Flightstar2 with 120hrs on it, may be the lowest time 582 in the country.

But the truth is that with the pricing of these engines being well over R100K I won't be surprised if they haven't sold a new unit in the crate for the passed 3 years.

Ranier I couldn't think of a better airframe for a 582 than the Jora, absolutely beautiful pairing.

What are the alternatives now at this sector of the market?

Roger, this little guy looks like its could fill the gap and to be honest being air cooled may just be better.

Well, with a bit of a grant from IDC this looks promising:

Interesting. Reed valves ? Hope they have improved. Remember well an Italian motor cycle I owned as a teenager - one of the regular tasks was fishing one of the read valve blades out of the crank case. Eventually got quite good at that. Until I discovered selling the thing would be a far better idea...

Best advice I ever gave myself with my Guzzi California T3. I nearly cried with relief when someone answered the Gumtree ad ....

It is merely a response to the fact that the Chinese beat them in the game. Have a search for gaokin 800cc 2 stroke aircraft engine. EFI and about a 3rd of the price.
