Supplier of small pieces/off-cut aluminium in Pretoria?

Unread post by heisan » Mon Jul 20, 2009 11:04 am

I need a some small pieces of aluminium. Certainly not enough to warrant buying full sheets. Is there anybody in Pretoria that sells off-cuts, or smaller sections? Or anybody who has some leftovers they want to sell?

What I need so far (6061, or 2024):
1/8" L angle extrusion (1" x 1.5") - 2 pieces 200mm long
1mm sheet for baffles and brackets

Any idea where I might find some?

Thanks,
Justin

When I was building my plane got all the alluminium and brass off cuts from Non Ferrous Metals. I see they have a Pretoria branch

http://www.nfm.co.za

Otherwise, Hutletts Alluminium, I think they are in Olifantsfontein

Bah - brainfade... Of course I have bought aluminium from them - that is where I always get it! Didn't even think of them, 'cause now I am hunting for aircraft parts.

Someone wake me up when Monday has passed...

This may be a dumb question, but do NFM stock 6061 T6 and 2024 T3 extrutions??
Sheet is not a big problem as Alclad will sell sheet by the square foot.

I remeber a couple of years ago I spoke to someonme there and they could not suply that.Wanted to know what thw "local" grade would be ie "arcitequral sections"

Could be that I didn't chat to the right dude. #-o

When I called, they said they had some 2024-T4 offcuts, they couldn't tell me exactly what though. I will go and look sometime.

OK - Finally got a chance to dash off to NFM, only to discover that regardless of what they said on the phone, they have no 6061 or 2024 extrusions. Only architectual extrusions (6063?). They may have sheets, but I was so p!ssed off with the wasted time that I left without checking    .

Alclad will always try & steer you in a direction if they dont have the necessary. I'm not at the point where I need extrusions yet.

Thank you Avcom, and the Avcommers that make it happen!

I received many kind offers, and one Avcommer (who does not want to be named) went out of his way, and found me the materials I needed. Kindness like this is rare these days, and greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for your help!

How's this for digging up an old post. :D

I am curious to know if you guys know where to get ali extrusions? Spoke to alclad and they only sell ali sheets. They reckon if you want 2024-T4 Ali bar or 6061-T6 angle you need to "bring it in" yourself?

Does anyone sell it in SA?

For small pieces, I have had some luck scrounging at local AMOs. For the rest, Placo will sell you full lengths of just about any extrusion.

I have also found NK Cutting in Centurion - they sell a range of 6082-T6 and 6082-T651 extrusions. I have NOT looked into their suitability, but it seems to be the European version of 6061 (characteristics are a little better than 6061, but worse than 2024).
