A very interesting thread...well done !!

Sheesh ..brings back fond memories....I grew up in George.

Who can remember the old George airfield ( FAGG ) situated just outside George near a suburb called Blanco??...There is now a residential area called Heatherpark built there.

A few months ago there was an article about the old George airfield in SA Flyer mag....some nice pics as well . But it was really sad to see how the apron and runways have detoriated and is overgrown now..

I can still fondly remember how we raced down to the airfield on our bomber bikes and then sat next to the airfield watching the aircraft land and t/o ...my favourite was the HS-748's ( Hawker Siddeley ) spooling up at the threshold...those engines roaring...( Rolls Royce Dart power plants if I recall correctly ??? ) ...made my chesthair ( which I didnt have yet....lol ) stand on end.

And then came the PW Botha airport in the late 70's ...was also there on the inaugural day...shame...still remember old "groot Krokedil " himself walking past us and shaking my hand...historic moments.

Someone still have pics of this airfield from those good ol' days...please post if you have any.....

Started working on the history of FK a few years ago, must dig it out and get around to finishing it at some stage.

Bredasdorp is also quite an interesting field, still some bits of wartime architecture around. 23 & 27 Sqn Venturas were there on detachment during the war to hunt the subs dropping the agents who were making their way to..........Nachwacht farm :D

Tried to get onto the old Eerste River base a few times to document it photographically, but it became an infantry base and all requests were rejected. Maybe time to try again.

Will see what other pics I have of FK and post.

Received this pic from an elderly woman in George about four months ago, looks like a Tutor overhead the original George field.

As a kid (Maybe 1972?) I watched Byron King test fly one of the first home built planes (Teeny) from the Stutterheim airfield.
Now it is a township, with the runway numbers still visible.

I tries to plot the old St Albans airfield near PE but it has faded away completely.

Then of course the Fairview runway in PE converted to a race course and then to a shopping mall

There used to be an old airfield at Haakdoornboom, +- 9km north west of Wonderboom airport. I knew the owner, who died last year, on who's smallholding a part of the airfield resided. He had quite a collection of old army gear and ammunition parts that he dug up while growing up there. Any info on this airfield would be much appreciated. Now only a short private microlite strip nearby.

Van der Bijl Park airport would also qualify. I see in Google's latest image, there is a hockey/socker (?) field drawn on the runway toward the southern end.
