ZS-WPX Project
Ok boys!
I fetched WPX today with the help from my good friend Ivan from Volkspares. She is safely tucked away at volkspares and I will take her to Tedderfield tomororw.
I have managed to source a new turtle deck, canopy , top and bottom cowl and will fetch that stuff next week monday. Flykr (carlton) is being very kind to let me store her in his hanger at tedderfield and I will draw much info and advice from him. He is an extremely competant KR pilot and has built a few including a KR1.
I have also spoken ton Ferdi and Jaco and they too have an imense amount of knowledge regarding KR's and VW engines and I will also try and sponge as much inform from them aswell.
This is going to be a great project and I hope to create a beautiful machine that both Andre and I would be proud of.
Here is a picture of us tying her down on the trailer
Much more to come
Regards
Craig

Re: ZS-WPX Project
Craig,
Congratulations, she looks stunning!
I'll give you a ring a bit later to arrange a "first hand inspection", he, he, he.
I like the canopy it's got on now, why change?
Wish mine were completed as far as that one.

Congratulations, she looks stunning!

The canopy is not that great from the side it looks too upright. Carlton and I will delibirate on this on Friday.
Come round to tedderfield soon and we can go for a spin in the cubby in the mean time.
Cheers

Re: ZS-WPX Project
23 June
Took the engine off at Volkspares and left it there as I will start some work on it asap. Change oil etc and get the carb working and get the timing lekker. Once I have the engine working nicely I will take it back to Tedder and refit. The plan is to get the current aerie flying with very little changes. Once I have done a few hours in her and learnt some of her quirks, the changes will start happening.
namely:
* fixed undecarriage with spats
* new canopy ,turtle deck and front cowl.
* new paint scheme and stripes
* new 2.4 vw turbo motor and prop
*new instrument panel and layout
*simplified interior
* general cleanup and rewiring.
anyways here is a picture of us offloading her at Tedderfield less the engine. Took a picture of my 2 babies Cubby CYB and KR2 WPX
cheers

3 July 2010
Ok started some work on the KR. Pulled out the current instrument panel. Two words to say here " Spaghetti Junction". The wiring and fuel connections are absolute mess. No problem as I was planning on redoing anyways. also the instrument panel will need to be redesigned as I am putting on a new canopy and turtle deck, front deck and tank. The engine is currently getting a fuel injection system and a new 4 in 1 exhaust. Also a general cleanup on the engine with electronic ignition.
watch this space
cheers

Re: ZS-WPX Project
I was lead to believe the engine is a dead loss that is why I had to drop the price by so much.
Nice one.

Re: ZS-WPX Project
Ploughman,
I’m not taking sides
but having seen the plane and knowing the amount of work that needs to be done, I think it was a good deal both ways.
The engine has no compression so there may some surprises in store when it’s opened.
With all the body work, engine rebuild and repaint I think Giarc64 is in for a good R30K. Let’s see....

I’m not taking sides

Only real pilots can fly KR's

11July Update
Lots of work today. Cut off the old canopy, forward fuel tank cover and parts of the existing turtle deck. I have placed the new canopy to position it. I will cut most of the existing turtle deck off and fit the new one piece and blend it into the canopy. It really look so much better with this bubble canopy as apposed to the old box style canopy.
Very happy with my days work.

18 July Update
After a fantastic flight in the Cubby to share a hamburger or two with the guys at bara (thank you) I came back to Tedder and cut off the existing turtle deck. I have now prefitted the Peter Eich one piece turtle deck which matches the bubble canopy and the front header tank cover and cowl.
Hopefully I will be taking WPX home where I can work on her more often , instead of just sundays.
This baby must be flying by early Jan
Speak soon

Hey Craig, not sure if you've seen this, but I found a site with some info on WPX.
