NOTE that my rendering settings are far from maxed out – therefore far fewer buildings and trees than can be shown, plus the satellite maps are at standard setting (16, i.e. low-res).

Lion's Head is missing it's head (I have not managed to find high-resolution elevation data for Ortho4XP), but otherwise the mesh is pretty good. Even the default elevation data shows things that FSX/P3D doesn't even know exists.

My quick 2c on XP (vs FSX/P3D):
  • Most aircraft look better on FSX/P3D (more big devs).
  • Most aircraft FLY better on XP ...
  • I get the airline flyers being happy with FSX/P3D: you can buy a polished aircraft and airport add-on and miss all the good stuff in between as you focus on the FMS and FD.
  • If you fly GA or helicopters then XP is a whole new experience (Google Dreamfoil B407, X-Trident 412). The air is alive: you will have (comparatively VERY realistic) dynamic lift and turbulence.
  • The default GPS is very good, with a G1000 in the pipeline.
  • The default Cessna 172 and Boeing 737 are excellent.
  • Scenery development is a breeze, and tens of thousands of free airports are available.
I downloaded the XP11 demo when it became available and have not started FSX/P3D up since (yes, I had both). In the process I canned a massive collection of add-ons, including my just-bought Cera AS365 I had waited two years for. X-Plane is not perfect but it feels YEARS ahead of FSX/P3D to me.

Hi Lads,

I'm looking at getting XP11, and these screenshots have shown me that it is indeed the right thing to do!

What site has the best add-ons for XP11? Both free and payware...

Also, any SA virtual airlines that support XP11? Same with USA and Europe, if anyone has any experience. Would rather go off personal advice than good ol' Google.

I'll need to build a new setup, as my laptop wouldn't stand a chance. Not that it's a bad thing :D

Thanks Ruan!

For the laptop? Right now I'm running an i7 7600 (I think), 16 GB of RAM, but a pretty stock standard graphics card.

My initial reason for a new setup is for photo editing, as I have a photography business on the side, as well as something I can day trade with. Adding X-Plane into the mix makes me realize that I'm going to have to go big, but the good thing is that I can take my time doing it.
