Anyone want to share orthophoto tiles? (XPLANE)

Unread post by Mrb13676 » Sun Apr 22, 2018 5:39 pm

By my calculations there are about 125tiles covering South Africa.
Have spent a lot of the weekend building tiles and have about .... drumroll... 21.
Seems like the ideal thing to share?
Thoughts?

Depends on the size of the zoom level you select. Normal ZL16 is about 2Gig per tile, ZL17 is 6Gig and i have a ZL18 tile that is about 18Gig for 1 tile from Bing (BI)

Yeah in retrospect it probably wouldn’t work to share these - copyright issues aside they are simply too huge. I’m going to need an extra HDD just for Orthophoto tiles. Add the HD mesh at about 2gb per 10x10degree sector and it starts getting silly. But WOW, it looks so nice compared to other sims and without.

Can almost do VFR flying round Jhb with the ZL17 tiles....

Hi MrB,

It would be amazing to be able to share these files, given the amount of work that goes into them, but I'm afraid that due to their size it becomes a little impractical.

I'm currently building tiles around the Durban area, moving outwards along the coast and inland. Using ZL17 for the base and ZL19 for key areas such as airports or other points of interest. Over that I've downloaded the OSM data for custom overlays. Looks amazing without too much tweaking.

The OSM data seems to help with buildings etc, and accurate placement of the autogen scenery as compared to the stock XP11 OSM data. Not really sure why they differ though as they're based on the same data.

Yes Mike. I am aboutto embark on creating tiles. For South Africa. Let's collab. We can use a dropbox or file share program to share tiles. I am on a Mac.But have Parallels. Are you keen toCoLab? Iam looking at only zL17 -19.

Hi legal eagle, keen to colab. I have contacted Mike also about this. Let's do this together. I am learning Ortho4XP am on a mac but have parallels.
You keen? Ilive in CT and want to do the coastal region from CT up to Durban. Maybe we can split up the task between the 3 of us and cover SA and MOZ?

This is what I have ZL17 CPT and the 4 blocks around Jozi The rest ZL16. 2-3GB for XL16 per block and between 5-7Gb for ZL17
I imagine ZL19 must be incredible BUT..... how massive will those tiles be?

Out of curiosity, could you perhaps attach a sample of what the scenery looks like ?
Thanks

On a modern fibre link those sizes are not that big, it's easy to move that data around quickly. I download far more than that.
