Where to buy 4130

Unread post by Laika » Tue Dec 04, 2012 10:30 am

Are there local distributors for 4130 steel and 4130 Tig welding rods?
Spruce do sell both but hopefully there is a cheaper option.
Any help appreciated.

Placo at Rand have limited stock of tubing.
Check the plans for the grade of rod & talk to Afrox or one of the welding consumable suppliers.

Afrox doesn't know about the existence of 4130 Chrome Molybdenum alloy. Their branch in Pta contacted some technical clevers in the company and I couldn't get helped. In fact, they told me you only get an aluminium alloy designated 4130 :? :?
Same at another "specialist" welding supply shop.

Try Hennie from Infinity aviation 072 383 0453 i.t.o price. 4130 is anyway imported, so will be rather expensive wherever. Are you looking for round tube or streamline tubing? Just asking because streamline is extremely expensive.

I came across this post in my search for some 4130 sheet/plate that I'm looking for.

I'm only needing a small amount for my VP1...

Any suggestions of where to source some?

Thanks

Unread post by homebuilt » Mon Feb 13, 2017 11:29 am

I am in need of a piece of 4130 tubing for a repair. Does anybody know if there is a supplier in SA who can supply a short piece of this material. I will be so glad if someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks in anticipation.

What diameter, wall thickness and length?

Wayne Estment used to bring in lots when they were making BearHawk fuselages.

I need two pieces seven eighths or 1 inch in dia with wall thickness point zero six five or bigger and 22 inches long. These are the main bearers for the gear and need to be stronger than the mild steel tubing which was used originally. Thanks.

Hi Chalkie,

I'm looking for some 0.09" thick sheet to make up a few pieces 1" wide, varying from 5-7" long to complete the rest of the struts for my VP...
