Bearhawk Builder - Metal Suppliers ???

Unread post by IntFly-Boy » Sat Jul 13, 2013 12:39 pm

Good Day all,

I have just about everything set up to start my Bearhawk scratch build, Only problem is the sourcing of the metals etc etc.

I need items such as:

Just a few examples

- 2024 T3 .025 thick
- .080 steel sheet (4130 n)
- 3/8" .035 wall 5052 aluminium tube
- .050 5052 aluminium

Basically 2024 & 5052 Aluminium and a ton of 4130 steel.

If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. I'm located in the east rand, but am willing to travel if that's the only way to get hold of my materials.

Thanx

Good luck with you build..get quotes from NAC, Alclad , and Placo for the 2025 sheeting etc. Also talk to Piet at Placo Wonderboom when you need the 4130 if not available locally

Cut the crap and order from Infinity Aviation or Placo. Two weeks waiting unless some Mexican at Aircraft Spruce messes it up  Good luck at the current exchange rates.

Good luck with your build. I can only echo what they say about ordering from Placo/Alclad etc.

I'm interested to know if you are going to do all the welding yourself?

Inta-fly,

Where about on the east rand are you? What plans number are you?

When you start your build, we have a dedicated Bearhawk section under 'aircraft types" forum

All the VERY best with your build. Nice to know there are more popping up

Welcome to Avcom!

And well done on your homebuilt selection! The Bearhawk's a great project.

My suggestion would be to get everything you need from Aircraft Spruce direct, sourcing materials in South Africa is a nightmare, no one ever has the size or standard you need to complete a job - you may get bit's and bobs (especially the 4130 requirement) around but I found it highly frustrating.

Alclad have the 2025 but often it does not have the protective plastic covering that comes standard from mills in the US so the sheeting often has scratches on it (which is not something you want)

Think ahead, the wait can be as short as 5 days or as long as 3 weeks but it is worth knowing that everything in the box you ordered is exactly what you need.

Draw up a materials list per plan and just order it in advance - the great thing is that you can get everything you need per assy from one location - i.e. aileron hinges require 4130 tubes in various sizes and rod ends. The assy also requires pulley's nico presses, thimbles bearings etc.... the lot can be ordered at once.

I think Wicks have the full fuse kit which includes all 4130 needed for the fuse, there is a guy doing laser cut kits too - this will save you a lot of time.

Hi Guys,

So as a result of being out of South Africa for a while and not logging in, my account went inactive, and required me to recreate it.

So I'm back again after quite some time.

Unfortunately I am yet to start. I was working up in Africa and time got the better of me, so my first step is getting hold of the raw materials at the new prices #-o
