POLL: New forum category - Builder's Corner

Unread post by heisan » Mon Nov 23, 2009 12:33 pm

Since I started my homebuilt project, i have come to realise that there is a huge amount of practical tips and info on Avcom, but often in type specific threads, or other places.

I would like to find out how much support there would be for a 'Builder's Corner', where people can post there non-type specific building tips (like, for example, Rudi's occasional posting on equipment and techniques), and ask general building questions.

I reallise that this could impose a higher workload on some of the more prolific builders (maintaining a build thread, as well as occasionally posting more general information here), but personally I believe this could be an awesome resource.

EDIT: Proposed forum title 'Maintenance and Build tips' - and generalise the thread a little to cover both construction and maintenance questions.

Thanks,
Justin

Does phpBB have the ability to have multiple sort categories.

For example - a build tip for a RV could go into build tips and the RV cat

Brilliant idea!!!

It will be a good thing to combine everyone's tips, hints and ideas into one forum as it is not always good to sift through all of the different aircraft specific threads to find something relevant written by somebody building a different type to your own.

Chris, a build tip on a RV could well enough be used by anybody building a "blik" aeroplane, as easy as a build tip on a wood and cloth jobbie might be used on any other type of aircraft of similar basic construction technique.

To the NO voters, please ensure that YOU are not the next person asking or looking for advice here!!

Chris, that is a great idea, but it seems that it is not supported in phpBB. Seems there may be some 3rd party modules to do this, but I am not sure how much the admins will like that...

Why don't you just start your construction page in the appropriate aeroplane section ...?
Like KR, RV or whatever?

1) My construction page is there...
2) The builder's corner would not actually be used for aircraft build threads, but rather for discussion of generic building aspects.

For example, Rudi Greyling has posted (amongst his build threads), excellent information on various tools, construction techniques, paints and such, which are excellent resources for all builders. There are various other discussions like the one on sourcing Strontium Chromate, with sources and prices that would also be a great resource, but seems to have disappeared (perhaps it was in classifieds?). It would be nice if usefull resources like that were in one place.

And of course, asking questions... Posting them on aircraft type specific discussions is pretty pointless for the less popular types. At the moment, the only real place to post them is on General, where they get lost in the clutter, and are difficult to reference in future.

Good idea! As someone who have been involved in building, modifying cars and aircraft etc for more years than I care to admit, one of the greatest difficulties, unless building from a comprehensive kit, is knowing where the 'stuff' is in SA!

The answers to that question changes frequently as well - as companies over time fall into the category of 'we used to have that but we don't carry it anymore"! Fortunately other companies sometimes pick up the baton, but it makes finding suitable stuff trying to say the least.

Such a resource as suggested might also help alleviate the "do it again - not good enough' syndrome - so common in home-building!

I would suggest just like the Academy and Flight Safety, you have a Maintenance and Build Q/A category.

Some people might want to ask a maintenance or "how to" question that is not specific related to a build and could get info there too.

Regards
Rudi

Makes sense - building and maintaining go hand in hand.

To the guys that answer 'No', if you don't mind, please post a short comment indicating why you think it is a bad idea.

Thanks,
Justin

Bump...

I don't know if 38 votes is enough to allow the admins to decide either way. Please vote if you have an opinion on the new category!

Thanks!

Good to see your idea has come to bear fruit. I think that this is a great idea to sift out those gems of knowledge hiding in the depths of the aircraft type sections. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Actually, you have 47 "Yes" votes as of 30 Nov2009 22:20hrs. You forgot to add the 9 votes from those who replied "Yes! And will contribute articles for posting".
