Battery Maintenance

Unread post by minivan » Fri Aug 06, 2010 1:37 pm

After reading a similar thread this morning about flat batteries etc, realised there were quite few people in the business of batteries and with a wealth of experience and knowledge ...... Please add your wisdom and insight here, as I believe there are many aircraft owners with problems of aicraft standing for long periods without any flying, flat batteries etc ....

I will start by adding 3 links..

I have used the Ctek chargers very succesfully for stand-by charging of cars, 4X4s, quad bikes, jet-skis & Aeroplanes
Ctek http://www.ctek.com/EN-GB/home/Default.aspx
Charger manuals http://www.ctek.com/EN-GB/support/manuals.aspx
12 0,8 Amp, 3,6 Amp, 4,0 Amp & 7 Amp models Volt models http://www.ctek.com/EN-GB/consumer/Car.aspx
24 V 4 Amp & 14 Amp, 12 Volt 25 Amp models http://www.ctek.com/EN-GB/professional/Default.aspx

I have been involved in 2 hangar installations where the aircraft & vehicles have been connected to a common charger via fused leads with plugs. This has kept the batteris in tip-top shape through the winter. :D

I use a CTEK charger and it works great on most batteries.

http://www.ctek.com/EN-GB/home/Default.aspx

They are expensive (R700 - R800) for the 3.8A one that can charge batteries as well as tricle charge them.
The main thing is they charge/condition and then switch off when the battery is fully charged. They monitor and when needed recharge the battery until full again.
Never worry about overcharging or a flat battery. (You can leave it on permanently as friend of mine with vintage tractors and cars do.)

I know you can purchase them at any of the AVGRI old OTK stores as well as some battery dealers.

You do get them in 24V models as well but they are expensive. (But so are the 24V aircraft batteries)

In order to prevent the rapid deterioration of our aircraft battery that results from extended periods sitting in the hangar doing nothing, we have fitted Megapulse to our Mooney which completely eliminates sulphation, the primary cause of premature battery failure. By fitting a charger socket (classified as a minor modification), it is quick and easy for an AMO to achieve.

More details about aircraft fitment at www.necon.co.za

Please note that I am involved with Megapulse in South Africa, but was first introduced to the product when our aircraft was AOG due to battery failure. Within 10 days, we had the aircraft back in the air using the same battery. That's when I became more involved with the product.

Ctek battery chargers are very good
I have for years looked after a number of cars that hardly drive, so need constant battery care.Ive been through a number of makes over the years and find the Ctek ones the best. Replacing them all with Cteks as they fail.
Havent had any Ctek failures.

Ctek are also OEM approved and even sold by many major european car manufacturers.

Only complaint is high local pricing
R2,000 for one that costs R720 in the USA, but US one is 110v so cant use it here. UK pricing for 220v ones is good, but shipping a problem

Hi,

This is an old thread, but does anyone know who is selling the Odyssey SBS-J16 battery in South Africa?
