Maybe they are learning from ATNS - discouraging visitors using a price signal like at ORT.

I have flown twice into the burn and there has never been a charge ... I have my doubts that this new charge is for every light aircraft attending, and rather for people looking to make money doing charter into the burn.

The event is excellently run, and does it best to be inclusive and not a money making affair, thus seriously doubt they are looking to fleece you. Tom who usually runs the 'airport' is an absolute legend, and every year people volunteer, that is what the burn is always about. Spend some time on the website and you will get an idea.

Cheers
Shaun
PS - if you are free spirited, it is definitely an event worth attending!
Privileged to have flown Cubby (ZU-CYB), Jabbie (ZU-JHF), Thunderbird (ZS-WPN, ZS-VWH), Samba XL (ZU-LAR), and C172 (ZS-JIM)

Definately agree, I've found Tom to be very accommodating and passionate about the Airspace side of this magical event

Landing fees are one thing, but a pax tax is illegal.

It is not called pax tax. It is "facilitation fees"

Airventure sure knows how to charge for Oshkosh, and people still come. Different charges for people, cars, planes, camping etc. but a lot of services built into and provided by those charges. Also a lot of paid and unpaid (volunteer) helpers.

It costs money to set up a temporary airfield and provide a shuttle. Who knows, it probably also adds to the insurance bill (if there is insurance). I suppose you could try include this in an overall admission fee to it is shared by all, but I suspect if that happens the organizers may elect not to provide the facility and service for the cost involved.

So maybe suck it up and pay, or drive there from the nearest town?

Freespirit-in-law asked me if I could drop them at Afrikaburn as a favour. Look like a landing fee of between R700 to R800 for a 172 dropping two people off. Could not see anything online for 'facilitation fees'.

Think I am going to point them to Hennie for a flight.
