I was a member of Rand Sky Riders flying at a wonderfull field in Babsfontein at the time. A number of us decided to post a decent SA record for rc-duration. The team included Dion le Roux, Graham Scott, John Patterson, Jay Bekker,Ian Stuart and myself.
Towards the end of 1988,yes 1988, we started designing the plane. We built the fuselage around a 2.5 litre fuel bottle which we used as the fuel tank. The wing ribs were a copy of a Multiplex kit called Big Lift. I am sure the older pilots will remember this plane. The fuss was built old timer style with just stringers and cross braces with length of 1700 mm, rudder elevator only. The wing was polyhedral, 2730 mm in length.
The motor we used was a OS-40-FS, a stunning motor. Difficult to believe that such a small motor can fly a 5kg plane!!
After a number of test flights the first serious attempt was by Dion le Roux in March 1989. A wonderfull time of 7 hours 43 minutes was achieved. A number of weightsaving things were changed and in May 1989 I had an excellent flight of 8 hours 18 minutes which is the current record.
The rules are quite strict eg 5 kg max weight, two independant time keepers, SAMAA involvement all the time.
We used a Multiplex radio. Jay Bekker organised a external battery source.
Can this be improved? Without a doubt, lipo batteries, mini servos, light weight wheels and landing gear, telemetry etc all means more fuel.
I still have the original plane, some hangar rash but quite service-able. Maybe time for a new attempt.
I hope this answers a few questions.
