How to get RC pilot's licence

Unread post by Millibar » Fri Jun 15, 2018 7:17 pm

I have been flying for a number of years on our farm and thus never had the need to get qualified or to join a club.

With the farm now sold I would like to fly at SMAA and of course need to get SAMA qualified for this. I am not interested in joining a club and I stay in Durbanville.

What is the procedure and costs involved and how do I go about getting an instructor to train / test / sign me off?

Many thanks

Hi Millibar

Sadly, you will have to join a club where your “peers” can then assess your skills. They will then arrange for 2 qualified SAMAA Members to put you through the proficiency tests. No way around it...

I don't care what you think of me! Unless you think I'm awesome - then you're right, carry on!

My flying is not that bad....I've never left one up there..

Thanks Wonko

Was hoping it would be easier than that.

Ok then, who to join and where to join?

Another question. Going forward, is it a SAMAA requirement to be affiliated to a club?

Many thanks

No not a requirement. There are no un-affiliated instructors/examiners that I know of. If a club does not have dedicated examiners, they will often invite instructors for a day of testing. Usually more than one clud’s members will come together and have their proficiencies done.

If you join SAMAA, and get your proffiency, you still need a place to fly, as you cannot just go fly anywhere. So you will still need to join a club, or pay landing fees at a SAMAA registered club every time you want to fly. Just easier to join a club. Visit a few in your area until you find one that you feel you would fit in.
