Minimum wingspan for SAMAA solo rating?

Unread post by foo » Mon Oct 11, 2010 2:34 pm

Hi,

Is there a minimum wingspan / length for the plane used during a solo rating exam? Any other special requirements? i.e. Only gas / nitro, or is electric allowed?

Thanks!

Hiya,

Full proficiency requirements for fixed wing are found here: http://www.samaa.org.za/pdf/fixed_wing.pdf

An aircraft is defined as:
a fixed wing model aircraft powered
by an Internal Combustion, CO2, Jetex or
Electric motor.
There is no minimum or maximum (other than legal maximum weight (25kg's I think)) size specified. You might find it difficult to complete some of the maneuvers required if you go too small. I think it is aimed at a typical 40 size trainer type aircraft.

If I've missed anything I'm sure Lionel will add it later.

PS: If you are going to do your solo with a 'Jetex' powered plane please let me know. I would LOVE to come and watch 8)

Great, that's what I was hoping. Would just like to get confirmation from SAMAA.

Jetex? Maybe if you were in a real hurry to finish the solo exam! 8-[

Hi,

The only requirement that I am aware of - or was ever informed of - is that the model aircraft must be capable of completing all the tasks defined to achieve the necessary rating - Solo ... Gold.

There are no restrictions (min/max) on model size other than model needing to conform to the definition of an RC model (which according to the CAA needs to be less than 25kg) refer PO18 on the SAMAA website for more info http://www.samaa.org.za/mop/PO.18%20Def ... rcraft.pdf.

In terms of the power source, also no restrictions as outlined by the SAMAA Proficiency Tests for Fixed Wing Powered Models http://www.samaa.org.za/pdf/fixed_wing.pdf. Jetex, for solo? Mmmmmm.

Lionel, I'll pay to see a Jetex model for ANY rating 8)

Maybe someone should consider changing "jetex" to "turbine". Call it "SAMAA's big entry into the 21st century" (sorry, got carried away :( )

Hi

From the SAMJA website:

"... Jet Pilots are encouraged to obtain these (SAMAA Powered Fixed Wing) proficiency ratings. However, the testing procedures for these ratings were devised for prop driven aircraft and due to the specialized nature of jet flying some of the procedures are far from tailor made for jet aircraft and many jet pilots are reluctant to do some of these with a turbine powered aircraft for fairly obvious reasons ..."

I sincerely doubt anyone would want to (or could afford to) get their Fixed Wing Solo with a Turbine powered model, but I will forward the 21st century :) suggestion through to Keith.

Regards,
Lionel
