Onex Is Ordered

Unread post by JontyL » Mon Sep 19, 2011 7:30 pm

I have ordered an Onex kit, 18 week delivery.

Dose any one have advise.

Areovee or Jab 2200 engines? I dont know the areovee seems a heavy option.
Is first of type reg a problem?
How would I convert to this plane? I fly a Jab UL120 at the moment. I have ordered the tri
gear version. I presume a convex onto the Sonex first.

cheers

Congrats - good stuff. I am glad you had the courage to take the plunge. Did you order the complete kit or some sub kits ?
Do you mind telling me how are you getting it here and how did you pay. paying seems to have been a problem? I will be following this thread closely because the Onex has been my first choice but i have been hesitant and have started looking at alternitives. Where are you based?
Hope this is the start of a great ADVENTURE.....

Hi Tobie

I ordered the complete kit with machined angle parts. They claim transport is not a problem, I havnt looked into it yet. No doubt there are a few options at varing cost. Paid 1/3 via EFT. A long wait though, 4-5 months. Should be ready for shipping early Feb 2012.
I am in Drummond (near Cato Ridge) Durban.

There is no Jab option for the Onex - you will have to develop it yourself. And it will be way too light. Rather go for the Aerovee - the airframe was designed for this engine.

Thanks

I knew there wasnt a factory option, they said I would have to make an engine mount and add
lead, but they dont recommend it. I thought it would be worth hearing peoples comments as I
dont know the aerovee and dont want to buy a dud. I have subsequently been advised the aerovee is
probably a better engine than the jab in the reliability department.

cheers

Hi JontyL,

I'm very interested to find out what the shipping, clearance, VAT, etc is going to cost one in addition to the purchase price. Can you please keep us updated? Further, studying the Web I got the impression that the AeroVee engine can only be purchased in kit form - is that correct? I know you haven't decided on an engine yet, but do you (or any of the readers) know of good, trustworthy workshops in SA that will be able to assemble the engine? you have not considered the Revmaster engine?

Further, if any other potential One-ex / Sonex builders in the Gauteng (especially Pretoria) area are interested to tackle such projects in parrallel, als Rudi Greyling-style, please let us hear from you.

Hi

The transport door to door is R18000 clearance +-R 5000-8000 and VAT on +-R270000. The exchange rate is not doing us any favours at the moment. Thats for airframe, aerovee, prop and MGL stratomaster. Still need upholstery, hardware, a few steam instruments and paint ect.

I havent check on an engine assembly person.

Cheers
