SAA had two resident photographers in those days (Janet Allison and Sonja Grunbauer);the pics were probably taken by one of them.

A pic for those interested in the aircraft of the early years of the SAAF.
The plane is an "Mpala" serial "156" ; it was locally developed by the SAAF by installing a Bristol Jupiter radial engine on the airframe of a De Havilland DH4. With this type of aircraft the SAAF flew combined SAAF-RAF trans-Africa flights in 1928 and 1929.

De Havilland DH-98 Mosquito "4805" of the SAAF.
The pics were taken at Palmietfontein in Feb 1947 ; the Mosquito had just landed with the first press photo's of the arrival in Cape Town of the British royal family for their visit to South Africa.

A lot of oil or something on the elevator and horizontal stabiliser in the middle picture - that's not normal.

Hi Bearcat

Where exactly is the clock?
The area in front of the terminal has been paved over?

Mars,

The clock was about where the red spot is on the image.
At some stage it was changed into a rotating airplane shape indicating wind direction. I remember it like that as a little boy in the seventies.
