A rare photograph of Koolhoven Fk.41 ZS-ADX

ImageSAAMS_history_SAAF_20190731_08a-res by omer mees, on Flickr

This aircraft was the second production aircraft built at the Koolhoven factory in Holland. It was purchased by Marcel Desoutter and registered as G-AAGC it was flown to Croydon where it was modified.
Marcel Desoutter acquired the licence for the production of the Fk.41 and established the Desoutter Aircraft Company at Croydon. The licence-manufactured Fk.41's were marketed as Desoutter Mk1 and Mk2 ; a number of these were exported to SA.
The first Koolhoven to reach SA was the Fk.41 ZS-ADX ; it was imported by the Air Taxi Company (Pty) Ltd of Cape Town in 1932.
ZS-ADX featured prominently in the search for the Swiss pilot Carl Nauer who went missing along the West coast of Africa in August 1933.
After the completion of his solo flight from Switzerland to Australia in DH80A Puss Moth CH-326 in May 1933, Nauer shipped his aircraft to Cape Town from where he wanted to return to Switzerland.Nauer arrived by passenger liner in Cape Town end June 1933.
He organized for his aircraft to be overhauled by technicians of the Air Taxi Company and for an extra fuel tank to be installed on the rear seat.
Nauer wanted to break the 1932 Cape Town to London record of Amy Johnson and therefore elected to fly to the UK via the West Africa route. He left Cape Town early morning 0n 5 August 1933 and reached his first destination, Mossamedes in Angola, in the afternoon.
Around 18:30 he took off in clear weather from Mossamedes for Douala in Cameroun.
Carl Nauer did not arrive in Douala and was never seen again.
On 7 August, the Swiss consulate in Cape Town informed the Swiss authorities that there had been no news from Nauer since his departure from Mossamedes. The authorities in Angola, Belgian Congo, French Equatorial Africa and Cameroun were also informed and asked to assist
in obtaining information regarding the missing plane and pilot. The Swiss government contracted John Williamson, manager of the Air Taxi Company, to organize and carry out a search and rescue operation for the missing airman. John Williamson, accompanied by Carel Birkby (journalist and later war correspondent) as observer departed for Mossamedes on 10 August in the Koolhoven Fk.41 ZS-ADX.
Using Mossamedes as base, they undertook daily flights along the Angolan coastline to search for the missing pilot.Because of mechanical issues, they flew from Luanda to Leopoldville where Sabena technical personnel assited them in servicing and repairing the engine of ZS-ADX. On 20 August Willamson departed from Leopoldville to Pointe Noire to carry out further searches.
Due to an overheating engine they had to land in Boma. There they received the news that on 6 or 7 August an aircraft was seen over the Congo river estuary. On 28 August another message was received from Muanda stating that an aircraft was seen floating and then sinking into the Congo river near Banana. Williamson decided that further search was fruitless and prepared to return to SA.They completed the return flight to SA in ZS-ADX despite problems with oil pressure and engine RPM.
Williamson's and Birkby's efforts were widely recognized at the time and highly appreciated by the Swiss government.
ZS-ADX later changed hands a few times, the last owner being a Mr.van der Merwe of Bethlehem in the OFS.
ZS-ADX was not pressed into service by the SAAF in 1939-1940 probably because it was no longer airworthy. The registration was cancelled after the aircraft census of June 1947.

Some beautiful air-to-air photographs of SAA's first Airbus A320 ZS-SHA 'Blue Crane"
The pics were probably taken just before arriving at FAJS at the end of the delivery flight on 9 November 1991.
