Here's a little more information on this aircraft after she was impressed into SAAF service

SAA Ju 52 ZS-ALR became SAAF 668 and was written off 7 miles NE of Mbeya on the 8th January 1941. I believe she flew into high ground during bad weather.

The crew were as follows: Lt PJ de Villiers (K), Lt NL Gordon (K), A/Mech RG Edwards (K), A/Mech RS Martin (K).

Passengers on this aircraft when it crashed are as follows: A/Sgt E Finlayson (k), A/Sgt RAH Grey (k), A/Mech AA Nel (k), A/Mech WV Olivier (k), A/Mech RJA Pennell (k), A/Sgt IM van Niekerk (k), A/Mech RS Martin (k), A/Mech IH Grek (k), A/Mech E Lang (k), A/Mech WC Els (k), A/Sgt W Olivier (k), A/Sgt CE van Aswegen (k).

Info from the book 85 Years of South African Air Force by Winston Brent. A good book as it shows the serials and history's for all SAAF aircraft from 1920 - 2005.

Very interesting regarding that crash! I flew in that area in a 172 last year, there is a rather large mountain in the way when departing Mbeya (Songwe Airport) so much so that we had to route around it as we could not out climb it by a long shot - if it were IMC at the time I wouldn't want to be in that situation

This photo demonstrates that point quite well (not my pic)

Here is a few pics of the South African Airways Airspeed Envoys. Neville Shute (Norway), the world famous author, was a Managing Director of the Airspeed company that built the Airspeed Envoy. Neville Shute's autobiography, "Slide Rule", is a most interesting book to read.

The Airspeed 10 Oxford is a larger development of the Envoy that came three years after the Envoy
