Herewith the final installment of Jan Smuts airport in the 70's, from the THL Archives.
Ahhhh, the memories.

First one is the iconic view I remember when arriving at Jan Smuts to spend time on the open air viewing platform looking out across the apron.

Thanks for posting.

An absolute pleasure. Here are a few photos my father took from that platform in the 70's (throught the crowd), of Tafelberg, ZS-SAL coming in from, I think, Australia.

I would like to post some images of the South African Airways DC-7b in a multi-part series. The images however will predominantly be internal shots from the THL Archive, as most of you know, the best shots to be found of the DC-7b from the outside will be in Etienne du Plessis' Propliners of South African Airways collection. If you would like to visit or re-visit his collection, please follow the link below.

Herewith some pics from the THL Archive, of Technical, in the Rand Airport days.
Hi there

My uncle, Frikkie (Fredrick) Lambert is the guy in the white overall to the left of the picture servicing the propeller (Edit: on page 19). He was a flight engineers during the 2nd world War and took part in the Berlin Airlift. On his return to SA, he joined SAA technical as an engineer.
He didn't want to fly as he said he'd had enough of that during the war and wanted to settle down with a family. He was stationed all over the country but ended his career as chief ground engineer at the then DF Malan in Cape Town.
I used to help him on Saturday's and school holidays in and around aircraft - my child's hands were small and I could reach into small cavities to retrieve screws, nuts, bolds or tools he'd dropped - this was in the mid 60's. my reward was to sit in the cockpit's and eat glucose sweeties from the galley. It was through him that I developed a love for aviation and became involved. I obtained my PPL in 1982 and have been flying ever since.

Thank you so much for posting all these wonderful images of our aviation history.

Best wishes
Chris Lambert
