I think it is time, at this sad time for a once great airline, to post some images of the South African Airways 707's.

Most of the images are from the THL Archive, while the first two images come from slides I scanned in, owned by my mother-in-law that was married to a SAA captain.

This will be the first part.

A bit of aviation history with some pics of KLM's Douglas DC-3 PH-ALR "Reiger" at Rand airport in Dec 1938.

Between 6 Dec and 31 Dec 1938 Capt.Johan Scholte commanded the Douglas DC-3 PH-ALR on KLM's first flight from Amsterdam to the Union of South Africa. The flight was a goodwill flight symbolizing Holland's interest in the Voortrekker Centenary Celebrations of 16 December 1938.
The plane carried 11 passsengers, special souvenir mail covers and some cargo.
The DC-3 landed at Swartkop in pouring rain during the afternoon of 11 December 1938.The official representative of the Queen, the govt. and the people of Holland disembarked there; the storm and rain somewhat disturbed the elaborate welcome arrangements for him.
The DC-3 then departed for Rand Airport where it arrived in the late afternoon; a crowd of approx. 4000 people welcomed the airliner at Rand. The plane remained on display for a few days at Rand.
On 17 December it departed for Durban and Cape Town, from where it returned to Holland.

The crew of the DC-3 during this flight were : Capt.J.Scholte,commander
Capt.A.Viruly,first officer
Mr.P.Dunk,engineer
Mr.J.Pestman,radio operator
Mr. ??,flight steward

It was added by Boeing when British certification was withheld and was to prevent over-rotation on take-off
