SAA busses Rand Aiport 1947.jpg
Rand Airport then and now. Not quite the same as it was taken with my cellphone, but you get the gist.

Pic of one of three RAF Vickers Type56 Victoria's(from No.216 Squadron at Heliopolis in Egypt) and their crews that visited the Union of South Africa in 1931.

The Victoria was the largest military aircraft seen in the country at the time ; it was a cargo/troop carrier aircraft.

The pic was taken at the Baragwanath aerodrome.

First powered flight in South Africa - aviation history from 110 years ago.

On the initiative of the East London town council (and sponsored by a local engineering company), an aircraft and its pilot were brought to East London as an extra attraction for the 1909 Christmas gala season.
The aircraft, a Voisin biplane, and its pilot, the French aviator Albert Kimmerling, arrived in East London on 20 December 1909.
The aircraft was first displayed in a hangar where members of the public were allowed to view it.
Some days later the aircraft was towed to the town's race track where a few test ground runs were made.
On the 1st of January 1910 the Voisin took off for the first powered flight in South Africa.( some 6 years after the Wright brothers first powered flight)
After further flights in East London, Kimmerling took his aircraft to Johannesburg where he made a number of powered flights during February and March 1910.He later visited Durban for more flights during April and May.At the end of May Kimmerling returned to Europe.

Kimmerling in his Voisin biplane during one of the first powered flights near Johannesburg (at Sydenham Hill in Orange Grove) on 26 February 1910.

A few pics of the French aviator Albert Kimmerling.
The pics were taken at St-Agatha Berchem (near Brussels) where Kimmerling arrived in second place in the 4th stage of the "circuit européen d'aviation" air race in July 1911.Next to him in the second pic is the French aviator Beaumont who won the 4th stage.

Seeing that we are in December, it reminds me of a December 7 years ago when SAA 747 Lebombo's, 40th anniversary first revenue flight for SAA was celebrated on the 10th of December.

A pic of the Baragwanath aerodrome taken sometime in 1930.
In front of the De Havilland Aircraft Company's hangar we have an interesting mix of aircraft.
A Junkers A50 Junior (probably ZS-ABV) , De Havilland DH80A Puss Moth ZS-ACA , De Havilland DH60G Gipsy Moth ZS-ABA , De Havilland DH60X Moth VP-YAB and Avro 594 Avian ZS-AAN .
