Mabula

Unread post by Blitz » Sat Mar 29, 2008 12:52 pm

We took NOY for a run to Mabula this morning.Conditions were near perfect and it was great to get out of the Gauteng smog.
The runway was in good condition and it is certainly BIG and WIDE--- 14/32- 1300m. Slightly uphill S to N.
We joined on the deadside and did an inspection and loopped back over the main camp to announce our arrival. Then went downwind for 32(south end ) which is pereferable because of high ground at the N end.
We spotted a Giraffe on the runway up to the far end near the the 14 threshhold but decided to we would have stopped by then.
There was a little CW on landing but otherwise it wasn't difficult .A very smart Lady ranger was there to collect us as we shut down and we were taken through to the main camp for breakfast. Excellant ,friendly service.Breakfast was a little dissapointing but not bad. Transport back to the strip was again avaialble promptly and friendly.

We walked most of the runway before take-off and confirmed that it is in good shape.Spotted an Aardvark /Ant Eater while doing this.
We did a downhill take-off even though we had a little tailwind. No problem and we were airborn just after 50% runway length.

Blitz, did you organise beforehand for someone to collect you at arrival or did the lady ranger come after she heard you overhead the camp?

Did you fly in there only for breakfast?

We had the number for the front desk reception but she arrived before we had time to dial it.
We did a an overfly of the main camp so that is clearly enough to let them know your intentions.
Yes we just flew in for Breakfast only.

Few friends wanted to fly there for breakfast on Sunday 17 Dec. 2017. I phoned them to confirm that it will be OK. They charge a landing fee of R380 per aircraft!!!!

I think the steep landing fees has all to do with airport liability insurance. Most of these lodges use one specific insurer and as far as I know is that they are are trying to force the lodges/home owners associations to rather go for a special airport insurance than to include it on their regular normal insurance policies.
