$100 Burger / Fly-in restaurants

Unread post by av8rgroot » Tue Jan 17, 2017 11:40 am

South Africa has some great airports!

I especially like the ones where I can fly in, hop out, stroll to the restaurant and have a drink or meal while looking out over the airport. :smt030 While there is a lot of airfield information out there, I struggle to find out which ones might be able to offer that "$ 100 Burger" (as we would call it in the U.S.).

My thinking is to just post the airfield name/location & maybe the restaurant name/type of food, the rest I can figure out. Please add to the list.

FAKN, Kruger, MP - Wimpy upstairs overlooks the ramp & runway.

Bagdad, White River - multiple restaurants incl. a very good Mexican.

FANS, Nelspruit, MP - a restaurant behind the maint. hangars

The Waffle hut, near winterton. Use the Glenside fire bombing strip (prior permission required). It's in Northern Natal.

If you wanna fly a bit further, come to Himeville. Very nice little restaurant in town, The Rose and Quail, walking distance, about 2km from the airstrip. If I am in town, will give a lift instead.

It you want some decent food make friends with a helo pilot, decent food in an inaccessible location for stuck wings.
You'll only find cr@p food near anything Resembling a runway.

Hi Guys.. if you can do distance (but its downhill all the way  ) then try Morningstar in Western Cape - about 10NM N of FACT

Runway 02/20 - Tar 850/10m

Full catered licensed clubhouse (Including the $2.00 burger)

Avgas and Mogas

Training School and AMO

Very friendly "aviation-speaking" folks - Anything that flies is welcome =P~

Awesome another field supplying mogas! Will definitely visit when in trouble area...
Is your mogas out of a permanent installation or bowser / drums?

It seems there might be a new $100 Burger Fly-in Restaurant in the Eastern Free State. =D> About halfway to Clarense, right next to the Betlehem/Clarens road there is a graded strip with restaurant called "Uyshuis." Saw three gyro copters there on Sunday.
Anyone having more info?

Yip - haven't been there myself (yet), but spoke to a very friendly Willie.

The graded airstrip is 1400 m long and at 5740 ft. 02/20
Co-ords given asS 28 23 43 E28 22 55

At this stage they provide breakfast till about noon.

The plan is to provide fuel, transport and accomodation later on.

I will definately visit soon.

Mc Kenzies, Richmond, KwaZulu Natal. It must be the best kept 1000m grass runway in KZN

The Hangar Café is situated at the runway with great food and venue - Open Wednesday to Saturday.

You'll park next to the Café.

Hi Lodge, do you mean a short walk to the shopping center near the airport, or is there something else hidden away there?

Last time we were there (about 3 months ago) it was a short walk to the shopping centre.
