Parys Airfield - Joining Procedure

Unread post by bobthebuilder » Fri Oct 05, 2018 12:11 am

The weather is looking nice this weekend, so I thought I'd visit Parys.

As I understand it, gliding activity can be expected to the east, and para drops from overhead.

Is there a specific joining procedure that should be followed?

Is fuel available over weekends, and do they have stock? (Avgas)

There was some concern raised earlier this year about the condition of the runway, is it still safe to use?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Standard Joining @ 2000ft AGL, circuit 1000ft AGL

From experience, keep to the east of 06/24 if you can, as the jumpers land in front of the hangers to the North of the Grass RWY 29/11 - you and the gliders will keep separated via your radios

The sky dive staff usually have a hand held and will communicate with you if there's anything happening - listen carefully as its not the clearest transmission :( The jump ship also announces intentions which you should be able to hear no problem

Asphalt runway surface is a little bumpy, but not unusable :) Some grass growing through the surface at the threshold of 24 last I was there but nothing that will damage your aerie.
what goes around, comes around.

Call 5nm inbound especially for paradrops. Land deep for 24 due extremely bumpy threshold. Otherwise a good place to visit

Flew in there this morning. The runway is fine, and the resturaunt is open. R50 landing fee. The Sky divers were very active, but the drop ship pilot communicates well. Well worth the visit.

Oh, the Avgas is well priced.

The munisipality is busy doing repairs to the beginning of 06 so please land deep. 900 m still available.
The restaurant has new owners and the menu has changed. Had a good breakfast for R60. Worth a visit.

Hi there.
I'll be flying in next weekend (13/16Sep). Safe to leave airplane there overnight?
Avgas available?
Can I park anywhere on grass or are there tie-down points somewhere?
Advice is what we ask when we already know the answer but wish we didn't...
