Vaal dam airfields

Unread post by JimmyZ » Sat Feb 29, 2020 7:14 pm

Hi all.

I'm looking for airfields I can use in the Vaal dam area. I plan to do a scenic flight to the Vaal, and am looking for a place to land to stretch legs.

I can see Deneysville and "Vaal" airfields on the standard SA VFR map, but I've no idea what the condition is at either, or if they even still exist.

Also I'm wondering if there are any other airfields not on the map that I will be allowed to use. I can do tarmac, gravel and grass.

Any info would be appreciated.

Cheers

The old Deneysville airfield no longer exists, the closest is Skydive on the Vaal's grass strip a KM or two down the road

Else Vereeniging isn't too far out, and Hiedelburg is also a possibility

FAVV is close by, depending where you are flying from. Fuel also available. Deneysville also has a grass runway. Usually most weekends parachutes are active if weather holds.

Thanks all for the info.

I'm thinking I'm going to do the flight without a stop, but it's still good to know where all the spots are I can put down, should I need to.

The water levels are relatively low at the moment, with the shoreline quite well exposed at the moment I wouldn't bust much of a sweat if the donkey coughed :)

Just be careful of fishermen etc around the shoreline

You can stop over at Lekoa Lodge (East of Vaal) or Circus, coffee shop is within walking distance

Thanks. Lekoa Lodge seems like a nice option.
This lockdown is proving to be a spanner in the works for my Vaaldam flight :smt085
