Official Fly-Inn Destinations with Accomodation

Unread post by PJL » Mon Dec 17, 2007 9:36 am

I thought it would be great to have an official fly-inn thread where there is accomodation on hand for pilots and pax to overnight. I know that we have discussed this before in the past but it is a pain in the butt to search for it everytime. I would like to see a "sticky" made and members who know of a good place could post it here with the relevant details and maybe even a pic or two. There are many of us who are "dying" to visit new fly-inn places and I am sure would welome such a thread.

I will post one as an example:

Dragon Peaks (Dragon) – I support this option.

Brilliant venue - but watch the MC!!!

It is basically a standby military airforce base for Lesotho border patrols. (In in official full time use, only pvt chopper company – scenic tours). There are ways - to secured for a weekend – providing we take up more than 20 beds p day (at possibly R110-00 p/p sharing, 2 bunk beads per room outbuilding complex …)

The facility (in typical basic officers mess) can house approx 120 people, with shared ablution blocs, large kitchen, dining hall, bar, controlo tower lookout, etc … braai facilities … most incredible view (mountain backdrop). You can literally run your craft to your doorstep …

Separately – but within 300 m is the holiday resort with all the amenities, pool, restaurant, etc etc … including a MOGAS Petrol pump. (It is within walking distance from the Drakensberg boys choir, with various other well know facilities within 10 radius – such as Champagne Sports resort, Drakensberg Sun, etc.

The venue is ideal for a typical VLA flyin (call it a Bush Pilot event, if you like). The runway is tricky – and not advised for lower our pilots. In my humble opinion 500 m, closely surrounded and ended by hills running 50 to 100 m. Open almost square field – bit bumpy. But the actual runway is market with a white line (for those not use to out landings, gliders, etc. (Fortunately – EL Mirridor – is about 10 km from there in open space … incidentally the glider guys are having wave camp there this – 30 000 +++ riding maintain winds. Says something about the possible conditions)

Can supply 3 month old pics – on the airfield.

What a fantastic idea - I for one am very glad for it.

I would like to make a suggestion: I feel it is important when one submits a place - to give some sort of idea of the broader location of the place- like Chrissiesmeer , it is the odd 45min or so east of Gauteng in the area of Carolina and Ermelo.

That way I know if this place is relevant to my search.

Great idea this - we often look for Plane Friendly places - would appreciate it if you could include a "dog friendly" (or not :( ) - our FlyDogs get really fedup when we leave them at home to do watch dog things!! Wavecrest is VERY dog friendly :D .. so is KittyHawk.

Hi PJL

What Fly-Away and Stay Destination comes to mind first when I ask you for one within a 120knot radius of say Grand Central?

I eagerly await your input.

Reason I ask: Some others have to drive there - so can't go too far.

Dirk
