Any chance this info can be summarized in the first post and grouped by province? Else possibly in a google doc?

What about places on the North Coast (without AVGAS) ?

My wife and I flew in to Kunkuru 10-11 Dec 2010 and we loved it!
- Private, secluded and tranquil.
- Affordable.
- Beautiful environment
- Super walking trails.
- Helpful staff (even provide AFIS on handheld radio).
- Accommodation comfortable, neat and clean.

I can see you love the place and care for it very well..

Flew in and camped over at Pyramid Airfield north of Barberton what a fantastic setup !!!!
We brought our own camping gear and food/drink (self catering).
They have numerous challets available and an outside communal kitchen and fireplace where everything happens.
Breathtaking views of the Barberton valley.
Excellent ablution facilities.
Very reasonable rates.
Excellently maintained grass runways.
They are selling shares at the moment whereby shareholders can build thier own house/hanger on the property.
This is a must for all aviators especially from Gauteng as it is not so far (50min in RV8 from Kitty Hawk).

Flew into Dragon Peaks Resort Airstrip with our RV 8 and stayed over in one of thier chalets for the night.
The chalet had 2 bedrooms ,a bathroom and lounge with a nice verandah ( R270 per person per night).
Nice pub and restaurant (great food),meal for 2 plus a bottle of wine R300.
Bigger chalets available and you can camp if you want to,we went to check the camping ablutions top notch nice and clean.
Supermarket at the Resort(no booze)otherwise well stocked.
Airfield to Chalet about 500m.
Excellent destination and well worth a visit.
Phone Brett (owner) before flying in ,for permission ,he was very helpful in answering a few questions i had on condition of airstrip etc (pm me for his cell no).
The airstrip is advertised to be grass 700m long ,land 24 take off 06 ,slope 3m rise from threshold 24 to Threshold 06.
There are high trees on approach 24 and terrain if you need to go-around.
Airstip about 25m wide at elevation 4000 ft.

Spent the weekend at Shumba valley farm in the eastern freestate, near Clarens, 140nm from Tedderfield. Few in with a Sling 2, Nice farm style accommodation, Bob the host was great, even driving us around to Clarens and back, There is a castle (Destiny castle) on top of a mountain right next to Shumba valley lodge with a runway on it, amazing to see from the air, Has anyone landed there?

Love this post! will certainly give it serious thought. What is the accomodation (For wife and kids?)like? Not that it really matters. How smooth or bumpy is the graas? what is the distance of the runway? Obstacles? Hangar?

I'm planning a weekend fly-away for the Hoedspruit Flying Club in August. This time we're not going cross-border and the idea of going to The Berg idea has much support with the members. It is unexplored territory for we Lowvelders.
I usually plan an outing to a destination that I know first-hand, but in this case I'm going in cold and I have to rely on briefings from the experienced.

I'm considering booking us in at Dragon Peaks (with El Mirador + shuttle for those who might not fancy the Dragon Peaks runway). Some nasty comments on Trip-Advisor are a bit worrying, but there are glowing ones too. What is the deal at Dragon Peaks nowadays?

Lake Naverone also appeals to me, but self-catering might be tricky for some with limited space. I'd rather take more pax and less provisions.

From our base we could fly to places like Glenside, Himeville, even Port St John's and Margate. In case the weather does not play along it is important that the base itself is a nice place to be.

Tips, comments and advice very welcome.

Hi Wynand

I'm planning on going to Shumba Valley, Battlefields, Dragon Peaks, Himeville and Margate in May with a Bat Hawk and will be camping.. I will let you know how it goes. By the way, I will be popping in to Hoedspruit for a visit and maybe some fuel later on in my trip. Maybe I'll see you there

Regards
Gav
