There are actually four but the fourth one is parked in front of the Safair complex and can't be seen.

One of the ones in front of their hangar 2-RLAV has been re-registered ZS-GAU but not painted up as such as yet

Im asking about SAA's A340-600's and not the A34-500's from Global.

I heard the SAA A346 frames are all time limited as SAA never bought the MOD packages that Airbus told to buy a few years ago.
Due to the long fuselages and bending motion Airbus told all A340-600 operators before closing the A340 line to buy the MOD packages
for future installation when the frames reach a certain cycle as they will not produce any MOD packages after the line is closed.
SAA never bought the packages and now they cant fly them after they reached the cycle limit.

Maybe SAA did not buy the MOD packages because it was not cost-effective?
How come every time my ship comes in I'm at the airport?

Yes because the taxpayers will just supply them with new airplanes.

This of course explains the rush for the A350s. It would be interesting to see the dealings to get the earlier delivery slots.

Wasn’t the delivery of the 5 A330-300’s was supposed to replace a similar number of A340-600’s? I think the A330-300’s also initially allowed capacity in the schedule to allow some of the A330-200’s to undergo D-Checks.

I saw ZS-SNA and B less engines and other bits and pieces at SAAT a month or two back. The rest of the fleet appear to rotate in and out of service periodically.

SAA's longhaul network needs about 17 widebody aircraft. They have 11x A330s and 16x A340s. So they have a bunch of extra capacity. Last year they were used to cover the A330-200 D checks. Now they max the utilization on the A330s and then use the A340s sparingly, keeping their cycles and hours as low as possible in order to avoid D checks and effectively retiring them when they reach their cycle limits using their useful parts elsewhere.

There are only two dedicated A340-600 routes (JFK and FRA) and even FRA received -300s fairly regularly now. This will decline more with the arrival of the A350s. I suspect that the end of the A340-600 is nearing at SAA.
