"FlySafair regrets to inform our customers of delays to two of our flights due to the high temperatures in Lanseria.

FA 303, from Lanseria to Cape Town, will have a two our delay this afternoon. The new departure time is 18:55 and the flight will arrive in Cape Town at 21:20.

This will have a knock-on effect on FA 304, from Cape Town to Lanseria. FA 304 will depart at 21:35 and will arrive in Lanseria at 23:40."

At least they have given the info upfront. What more shall they do? Not much you can do about the temperature. It's still in the 30s at Lanseria and OR.

Better this and the operation continues safely, or is it better to just ignore the performance calculations? Or leave all the bags behind. Or half of the pax?

Trust me man. Compared to the company I worked for in SA, this is as minor as it can get. At least they had the decency to send out some form of communication. Nothing that can be done about the temperature, but to wait for it to cool down.

Added to the payload limitations for the evening flights to FACT, is the fact that you have to carry fuel for FAPE as the alternate, because FAGG closes at 17:00z (19:00) which adds a couple of thousand kilos to your takeoff weight.

Trust me the company and crew are as frustrated as you are over the delay.

This is more about Safair operating the B737-400 from Lanseria rather than the B737-800s. Kulula and Mango operate B737-800s from Lanseria and had no problems with temperature today.

My son's Safair flight was delayed leaving CT last night. They recieved regular sms of the expected boarding time. Eventually arrived after 1 am this morning. Now we have a better understanding of the issues.

Antman. The 800 does not get limited out of FALA on short regional flights. I ran some figures quick.

Full, Runway 25, 30 deg C 1025 the RTOW is limited by landing weight. Fuel allowed for the for a 59 ton ZFW would be 11 800. Fuel required with FAPE as alternate, about 9500. This is for wet Runway. 3 mm standing water bring the fuel allowed to 11 700 and 6 mm to 10 200.

The 400 does not get close to the 800.

It seems like the trend is to take airlines to task, these days - no matter what they do.....
If you stick to the "book" people complain - if you "fudge" the figures, people complain.
Just look at it this way, at least you are flying with an airline that doesn't compromise on safety - and it still beats driving there by car.
"Time to spare? Go by air" - is a motto one should always bear in mind.....

Well Done Guys,

Yes, the 400 is not nearly as powerful as the 800, and FALA is the one airport where we have this particular problem. The engine out departure is less than ideal. We train heavily for this.

The hot and high threat at FALA has been identified, apart from training we have decided as of February next year FALA will be serviced by 800’s only. That when the first on the next three NG’s arrive.

Interesting, thanks for the update. Any idea where the extra -800’s are coming from? Will they be leased or owned?

Leased from ASL, which is a part of Safair.
They coming from China. I believe they don’t have Wingles, however a decision was made to buy and fit them.
