To fly Qatar or not

Unread post by JacoBrits » Tue Jan 01, 2019 6:51 pm

Hi

We are planning a trip to Singapore in March.

Qatar offering the best price deal.

Any reason not to fly with them?

I usually fly Qatar, and really enjoy it. Much better than BA or SAA in my opinion.

I assume Qatar will not be direct? Singapore goes direct from OR Tambo so that's always a big plus if it's a massive layover. Otherwise make a couple of days of it in Doha? ;) Makes it worth it!

Just have a look at Singapore Airlines webpage, as from March 2019 they will be flying to SA 10 times a week and there might be some specials on the way.

Due to the blockade of Doha by other GCC countries as well as Saudi, their passenger numbers have decreased substantially. Offering specials is a way of offsetting this. Flights are also longer from SA due to not being allowed to fly through Saudi airspace.

Nothing wrong with the airline though.

I just returned from KTM (Kathmandu) to Doha to FACT with them, service was top draw, planes clean and great inflight entertainment.
Doha airport makes Dubai look like a toilet
Just my 2 cents.

Looks can be deceiving. Just don't be there when it rains or when there is a sandstorm

Pouring red wine into a plastic cup is cheap... compared to KLM/AirFrance bottled wine. ;)
... and KLM/AirFrance was cheaper than both Emirates and Qatar on my last trip.. and quicker.
This is really saying a lot ;) I booked 3 months ahead too.

SAA was about 2Gs cheaper but on principle I refuse, as well as absolutely no interest in arriving at JHB.

Depends where you were flying to/from ... if it was to/from a destination that EK or QR have capacity constraints or strong O&D market then why would they want to sell cheap tickets? On the other hand, it may be to/from a destination which AF-KLM don't have the same constraints.

Definitely not route dependent.. as I've traveled the same route on all, at half-price KLM direct.
They were trying to rip off the Xmas traffic, big time - shame on them.

Not to mention the KLM/Air France staff actually were the best, BIG thumbs up to them.

Amsterdam? The Dutch government made a decision in 2015 to not allow any further EK and QR flights to AMS. Also, Schipol is a highly constrained airport in terms of slots due to the Alders Platform with limited (to no) ability for airlines to purchase slots. EK and QR are severely constrained at Amsterdam, hence the higher prices ...

Different story when you look at EK/QR prices to London where they have limitless access and an ability to acquire slots of Heathrow and Gatwick and no slot constraints at Stansted, never-mind access to Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle. EK alone have 19 flight per day to the UK, and QR up to 15 (although some less than daily). In the Netherlands, they're limited to 3 and 1 per day, respectively.
