SAA Pilot Flies with fake ATPL for almost 20 years

Unread post by b190guy » Wed Feb 20, 2019 4:48 pm

I have it in good authority that an SAA Pilot has admitted to flying with a fake ATPL license and was due for command that he turned down.

William Chandler was reportedly busted after an incident in the German airspace that kick started an investigation. Soon after, he admitted his wrong doing and now SAA is after him for all the increases he received since he falsified his license.

I don’t believe that instructors at the institution didn’t pick this up and that he kept this lie going on for years without anyone else finding out. Someone must have protected him.

I wonder why this is kept away from the media and the public! [-(

Hope your facts are correct since you put names in your post.
Due to the price increase in ammunition, do not expect a warning shot.

And now also ‘disowned’ by SAAPA and ALPA. This is unprofessionalism of the highest order. And all those with preconceived ideas as to who commits such a crime will be shocked when they read the facts.

Is it a CAA issue? Do you need an ATPL to be P2 on an A330/340 on international operations?

CAA issues the licences, if a licence is fiddled that's fraud. It's CAA's job (probably via the cops) to go after people that don't abide by the regs.

I would think that's an internal matter for the airline.

It depends what the Ops Manual says. Regulation says you must follow the OM if you don't you are in bridge of the regulations and CAA has a case.

Co-pilots have to have a P1 rating for the long range, as they become the pilot-in-command when the Captain is in the bunk.

So, he was pilot monitoring, but handling the controls?

He then made unauthorised turns in Swiss airspace that not even his Captain "understood," which may have resulted in damage to the aircraft. Where these "turns" of such a violent nature that they could damage the aircraft, or at the very least, require inspection?

And to top it off, the SAA Safety Officer is suspended for trying to cover for Chandler.

With 20 years of flying experience, and presumably having a legit CPL, I don't think having an ATPL would have prevented this?
How come every time my ship comes in I'm at the airport?

He was P3 on mostly Eastern bound flights, specifically HK. As the OP says was potential for domestic P1 position on multiple occasions but never took that up. May I be shot down and burned for this , so be it but the person in question is/was a very proficient and professional airman despite the obvious.

It is shocking news. :(
