ZGGG is really only a China Southern hub. SAA will only have access to other China destinations and China Southerns networks . ZGSZ (Shenzen) would make better sense (if any sense at all). Anyway , SAA seems happy to sacrifice 3 HKG services to do this by the looks of things.

Perhaps Cathay might consider slapping on an extra 3 HKG-JNB flights with a A350 sometime soon?

Cargo operations will complement the viability of this route considering that high value cargo is sourced from Guangzhou.
Good luck lifting belly cargo in an A343 on a 14h sector

The initial type will be the A343.
The route will eventually be served by A350s.
Apparently it will be announced soon....

If Beijing didn't work, why will Guangzhou be any different? Lack of direct flight competition?

Beijing is a political and cultural destination. Guangzhou is a business destination. Very different.

I think this is an excellent move from SAA. HKG has become a difficult destination over the last few years, not just for SAA but for many carriers. The capacity constraints at HKG have become problematic in terms of slots, operating costs in HKG have increased substantially and HKG's position as the regional hub and the entry point to China is not longer what it was (there is far more competition for services directly into mainland China). Furthermore, there is no longer a sufficient yield premium between JNB-HKG to justify the route on O&D traffic (you routinely see business class fares for below $2,500 which is remarkably cheap for such a long flight).

I think CAN will offer SAA more in terms of connections than HKG, and at a much cheaper cost. Air China offer 18 destinations from CAN (compared to only 7 from HKG) and 35 through their subsidiary ZH.

I think the comparisons to PEK are not fair since JNB-CAN is a fair amount shorter than JNB-PEK and PEK was a horrible connecting point to the rest of China compared to CAN (from JNB). Furthermore, they struggled to get decent slots at PEK which isn't a problem at CAN.

Do you think SAA will reduce the frequency to HKG since they will be going to CAN?

Will it be a daily to CAN? Any idea when they will announce it?

Here’s a quote from the article linked in the first post of this topic:
There will be three new flights per week to Guangzhou, in South China, and these will complement SAA's current operations to Hong Kong. This means, SAA will fly four times a week to Hong Kong. Airbus A340-300 aircraft will operate both the Guangzhou and Hong Kong routes.
