Hi CP,
Ela's are perfectly good and capable gyros. Just make sure the machine is accident free and the maintenance schedules have been followed.
The 914 engine TBO time will be dependent on the year of manufacture (earlier engines #'s 1200 hrs / later 2000 hrs) but may also be run "on condition". Speak to your AMO or AP for clarification.
Despite being good gyros, my personal consideration about buying an ELA would be the resale value potential. Of the couple of hundred gyro owners in SA, most fly either Autogyro GMBH (MT-03 / Sport / Cavalon etc) or Magni (M16 / M22 / M24 ). There are probably fewer than 60 Ela's in SA. As virtually all the schools either train on either Autogyro or Magni machines there is considerably more demand for these gyros than ELA's and come the time you want to sell the ELA it may be more challenging finding a buyer than compared to the other more popular gyro types. The up side of supply and demand of course is that you can probably pick up an ELA for less than a comparable hours Autogyro or Magni.
