The fact that the lady occupants son could give us a last known position on her I-phone, practically were the X marks the spot.
Without this, it would have resulted in an extended ground search in bad weather and a not so possible aerial search looking at the initial forecasts.
If you are the owner of an I-phone, or for that matter any other phone capable, please leave some details with someone you trust.
It makes a find in unfavorable circumstances just so much easier.
Tracking an I-phone without the Apple ID is practically impossible not only in SA but to all SAR crews worldwide as I asked my counterparts this very question in New Zealand.
No Apple ID or active Find my Friend - no information.
If you do not trust anybody, leave it in a safe or bank or under a rock in your yard.
It saves a lot of agony and better the chances of saving your life.
