Flight to the Delta

Unread post by JabiJOY » Tue Sep 19, 2017 11:54 am

With restricted time availability for a decent trip in the Jabiru this year I am planning a trip to the Delta.

Due to various commitments I only have a weekend and a bit for a trip so would probably fly to Gaborone on a Thursday evening and then to Maun on the Friday morning and back to Joburg on Sunday with a bit of fun in between.

Planning on a weekend in November.

Thought I would open it up to you guys in case others are in the same predicament and would be interested in joining.

Sounds nice.
But just a question - from Gaberone to Maun takes you over very inhospitable and monotonous kalahari veld. ( done this by 4x4 for years)

Clearing customs at Tati or rather Francistown gives a more northen route to Maun, - with close views of the makgadigadi pans as a bonus.

Except if distance is a consideration.

I've been dreaming about this for years, but also with the time constraints - so I would be very interested.
I will follow and if at all possible (dates and budget) will love to join.

And as Marius pointed out - November is beginning / in their HOT season. Most activity in the afternoon.

So weather will have to be a consideration.

Simple rule for flying in BW in the summer: Plan all flights to be on the ground and tied down by 10h30.

Sunrise is 05h00 so that gives you 5 hours of quality flying 8)

Thanks for the input guys.

To avoid the summer heat the plan would be to fly to Gaborone the evening before so that we can leave to Maun early the next morning. Direct route from Gaborone was chosen as it would be the shortest and less chance of getting stuck in the air in the heat of the day.

Just an update on the details:

Date: Looking at 1-3 December 2017.
Routing: Lanseria/Pilanesberg - Gaborone - Maun (same route back maybe with a deviation over the pans or via Francistown)
Fuel: At any of the above
Accommodation: There are various options available in Maun. I would prefer to stay in the Delta so looking at some options which wont break the bank.
Costs: Fuel (around 200l expected for my Jab), customs, Botswana permit for NTCA, plus cost of accommodation and any other activities
