Handheld Radio as IF backup?

Unread post by von Weitz » Mon May 11, 2020 10:05 am

Hi all,

I'm about to buy a handheld radio (for redundancy). I'm considering going all the way and getting one with VOR/ILS and GPS capability. Although pricey, I figure it is a complete package for emergency situations.

Does anybody have experience with these type of handhelds? I'm specifically wondering about reception range regarding the VOR. No sense n investing in one of these if the VOR will only be usable from 3nm...

I'm considering the Yaesu FTA-750L.

Any advice?

Thank you in advance.

I have used the A24 VOR function, which works well but I really can't recall the range it does offer but it is def above 5NM as I recall. I don't think these are available anymore but sell often on the second hand market which is where I located mine.

I guarantee you you would kill youself and your pax if you ever tried to fly a VOR or ILS approach using a handheld in IMC.
It's also obviously not a legal second VOR if you were meaning to use it to find intersections.

I have the A24 - great radio - never used the VOR function in 11 years of ownership.
