We have our IF Forum!

Unread post by Hop Harrigan » Wed Apr 13, 2016 7:17 pm

Thank you to all those who supported the poll for an IF Forum, and to those who didn't, I hope you do in fact find it interesting and useful.
I am looking forward to some very interesting IF discussions.
There was also a suggestion to include discussions on IF-related Wx...sounds like a good idea.
Thanks again!

Questions like the Plettenberg Bay cloudbreak will make this forum a popular stop for the guys. Instrument flying is not difficult. It just takes clear thinking, a focused mind, discipline and PRACTICE.

You MUST remain proficient to remain safe.

Well done guys!!

Good one - and congrats on your IF rating.
Tried FIXED WING CPL to obtain IF. Passed a couple of subjects and ran out of time due to work contraints.
Let's poke CAA for getting their act together for the PPL IF.
heard anything lately?

Hi BOWMANSHILL,
Nope, haven't heard anything new. Thought I read a different thread referring to June/July timescale?

One man's pee'd off is another's poking fun, guess it depends on how thick someone's skin is and if they grasp the concept of tongue in check.
Besides, there are some very serious folk that wander these virtual halls, it's hard not to.

Back to the topic.

I'm glad, personally, about anything that supports learning. I'm just not sure diluting the Academy gets us there. As a non IF pilot, I enjoy learning from those that have been there before.

Do you think it will be worth your while to do some under the hood training with an instructor to keep yourself and family "safer" in a situation? Take note that I mean safer and not legal.

Night rating accomplished a while back. I fly down to Mossel Bay often and the mountain crossing and possible IF conditions remain my quest for an IF rating.

Difficult working for yourself and trying to pass 7 or then 8 subjects. Flying is no problem - one always finds time for that.

Regards

Hans, I am worried about your thinking about the 'some under the hood training'. This could give you a false sense of security and cause you to venture where you should not.

If you can make time for flying and you are really keen on the IF rating you will find time for that too!
With your mission profile, getting an IF rating is a must.
I almost killed myself on my first trip to the coast in my Seneca, trying to push VFR into IMC.
Since then (20 years) almost all my cross country trips are filed IFR.

Remember, once you have the IF ticket, the real works starts - learning to fly alone in real IMC in a real aircraft - it takes time and effort but can be very rewarding.

Thank you for the reply Iceberg. Your input, especially flying one of the best IFR platforms yourself takes cognisence.

Maybe I should rephrase. It is exactly what I said - safer - not legal.
Being it to give a false sense of security will - I hope never happen.
I once, thankfully alone, flew into IMC on my way from FAVB to FARG. Slowly pulled up, kept wings level, tscanned instruments and broke cloud on top. Did 180 and went home. Landed and sh$t myself.

I think if I had a better understanding of vertigo that day I would have chewed less leather off the fronts seat. The IMC conditions were of those that weren't in the forecast and neather visible on route. You will know. It happens.

This my reasoning in spending a couple of hours under the hood ??
